Lets try again.. 3rd times the charm right?

Well after my mega-FAIL with my old 98' base coupe(2200.. Z-kit.. primer black.. yeah) and my not so much, but still a FAIL 98' Z24"cavfire".

I'm at it again.
This time its a 96' Z24 I grabbed off of craigslist.
Body had 204k on it, but surprising is as clean as the day it came off the floor!
No rust, bottom of car is nice and black still!
Motor has less then 50k, tranny has around 115k.

Had the car less then 24 hours... tranny decides to dump on me. great. AGAIN.
So after the 2nd Isuzu tranny swap(last Z had same problem), thank God for pull-a-part and 3 months waiting on the time/money...
Its back on the road.
While waiting for the transmission, someone ass hole decided to push the car off of the jackstands...
After a few hours of wrestling with the car to get it back up, only damage it caused was destruction of the side skirts.

It has a rebuilt 99' block, with a 96' head(paperwork on both).
Pacesetter 4-1 header
Borla Muffler
I've since removed the EGR and swapped to the 2.3 "lo" manifold W/ tb.
Here in the next week or so going to be swaping to the 2.2 coil packs, switching from the dodge neon coils I had before.
Come Jan/Feb "secret cams" will be going in hopefully along with a tune.

Exterior its pretty much the stock 95-99 Z24 kit, minus the skirts(which have been a item I've had no luck finding).
00-02 inner tail lights and 00-02 Z/LS spoiler.
Rear tails, corner and bumper lights were tinted with NightShade, headlights were painted by a shop as a trade.

Interior is stock.. and blue.. Brackets are being made for Celica front seats, and in process of collecting black interior pieces.

Rims are black painted 17" Eagle Alloy 193's with Kumho tires
Fronts are 45, rear are 50. Bought then like that, the front are brand new, the rear has a brand new and the other needs replacing.
Not bad for $125, need to get some center caps tho.
Friend is going to powder coat some lugnuts for me as soon as I decide on what color.
I was thinking White. not sure...

Anyhow... still a work in progress, but here are pictures.
Also.. I want to remove the side moldings, and tried but the pain keeps chipping underneath, so they are staying for now.
Also the bumper had a huge hole underneath the filler plate(sold), so I just cut it out completely.

Trying to keep it clean and simple, somewhat of a sleeper I guess you could call it.
Tax time is going to bring 03-05 LS skirts and ether LS rear bumper or base with rksport rear lip(maybe 00-02 if I can find).
Front end will be ether 95-99 Sunfire GT or 00-02 base W/ rksport lip. Evil eyes are a must.

When I purchased the car, it had a fiberglass ram air hood, which I traded along with some money for a stock white hood.
I think it looks better IMO

Under the hood needs a little cleaning up still, gonna paint the upper mount as soon as I get the insert.
Moving the alarm horn thing behind firewall, bolt down strut bar, hide some more wires/vac lines.
Have a alternator I pulled from a junkyard being powder coated black by a friend.
Hoping to get carbon fiber covers for the Coolant and PS Reservoirs.
A/C will be removed within the next few weeks(don't work anyway).
Carbon Fiber radiator shroud is slightly warped, and had to cut ends off to fit, but it was free and looks better then the plastic one.

After a quick scrub down, gotta go back and do some detail cleaning.

Right now the only issue I'm having is all the suspension bushings, ball joints and wheel bearings dying on me at one time.
*SIGH* a quick trip to the junk yard and a Autozone trip and that should be taken care of.
Next big upgrade will be motor/tranny mounts. Hopefully for christmas

Come tax time hopefully I can get alot done with the car, looking at lowering it as well.

Another thing that has to go is the horrid tips on the muffler, I love the sound of the muffler, really don't want to lose it.
Was thinking of having the muffler pushed back and having ether dual exits or even doing a "stealth" exhaust with ether no tip/s or a stock looking/low profile tip.

Looks nice, Couple of things

Why did you go witn the LO mani and not the HO?
Don't bother with secret cams, might as well do the HO 2.3 cams.
You dont need a tune with either set of cams
Lastly, I hate it when people put rims on a J with it not lowered, looks so 4x4. I know you said its in the 'plans' but that should be first on your list after you get all the essential parts for the car like your bearings and stuff.

Keep it up though. Good luck.

You talking about muffler?

Actually I had the rims long before all the crap started failing on me.
Wheel bearing just started failing about.. a month ago, had rims alot longer than that.
I hate steelies, I'd rather have a 4x4 stance then drive around with steelies on.
here is the car with "steelies"

If its going to be a "4x4" I at least want it to look good doing it lol
I came so close to picking up some sportlines, but a hour drive turned out to be 3+ and I didn't have the time for it.
And they got sold.. which turned out to be my friend who bought them. irony I hate you.

I went with the "lo" manifold because I know the "ho" causes loss in power on a "stock" motor.
I've never heard anyone say not to use the secret cams, from what I've hard the HO cams require alot of modification to use?
And should only be used with the HO manifold/boost?
Something about the HO need to be machined so the PS pump will work, and the cam towers have to be modified to fit the cams?

I always thought:
Secret Cams = "lo" manifold
HO Cams = "ho" manifold

For those of you using a 2.3 manifold, what do you do with the throttle cable, I notice most of you run the cable somewhere and its not visible.

Currently the car sits.. waiting for money to fix it, hopefully Christmas time will solve this issue.

On my HO mani I used the throttle cable of a early 90's grand am. Its a bit shorter as I didnt want the long stock cable going around the bay. My bracket on my manifold is a bit different from yours though. There are a couple variations, yours comes from the top almost and is a much bigger bracket then mine. I did have to modify my bracket to get it to work proper. When I first tried hooking up the cable it was holding the throttle plate open slightly. With a little modification I was able to get the cable to work properly.

Yes your right about the HO cams require a lot more work. But it is well worth it. I do not know your future motor plans, but if you ever decide to add some 'go' then HO's will suit you better.

I know there are a lot of people who run the HO mani naturally aspriated, not sure about the power loss though with it. I had my HO mani on a n/a motor for only about 1000 miles, then boosted the motor still using the HO mani.

To answer your question, i used to run my throttle cable under the main coolant hose next to the powersteering. Couldn't see it at all.

The engine bay is 10x cleaner than the rest of the car. I have never really seen that before.

How so, I since a bashing coming on. so go ahead.

I'm not looking for any mad power, its my d.d. will the secret cams not add any power?

Let me rephrase that while I still can, will the "Secret cams" not increase the performance of the motor at all?
I already felt quite a difference between the stock 2.4 manifold and when I swapped to the LO manifold.
I was imagining the slightly larger cams would also provide some improvement?

Wasnt bashing though it may come off like that. I apologize if it did. Most cars that I see here are ultra clean on the outside and the engine looks like a racoons nest.

Props on the clean bay. Just need to get the rest up to par with it.

Yes, you will see some improvement from the "secret cams" What is being said though, is that if you are going to do cams, might as well do H.O. cams while you are in there and reap the benefits of even more of a performance gain.

i like it. a little too much on the whole "black and white" theme if you ask me but hey, i don't have to drive it.

and i second the clean engine bay. nice work.

I think any cam swap will require a tune to get the full out of them.

Feels good to have something not getting bashed lol
Thanks for the comments on the engine bay, I'm pretty happy with how the engine bay is coming along.
Still wanna relocate the battery and get a better fitting intake tube in there.
Also need to finish moving some hoses/wires.
Can you set up a LD9 without the reservoir like that one guy did with his Eco?
Do they make non carbon fiber coolant/brake reservoirs?
Also thinking about ether painting the whole strut bar black or reversing the colors, what do you guys think?

As for the HO cams, what all is required?
I was wanting to get a extra 96-97 head, get it ported and polished along with some stronger valves/springs to go with the Secret Cams.
But if the HO cams aren't that much harder to use, I might go ahead and grab them.
What all is required?
I know the intake cam needs to be modified to run the PS pump, and the cam towers need to be enlarged to fit the cam lobes?

As soon as I get the extra cash I'm getting the spoiler painted white, I think it'll clean up the "bit to much on the black on white".
At the time I had just got the spoiler from AZNCAV, and I had some of the paint I used on the motor and painted it so I could put it on.
Looked good at the time, kinda tired of the black spoiler now lol

Some new toys coming on/around Christmas time:
First off get the suspension issues taken care of
rear strut bar
floor bar
Spoiler painted white
HOPEFULLY lss side skirts and 03-05 rear bumper
Maybe get those Celica seats finished, just gotta start getting black interior pieces now

I've decided after a talk in the chat tonight, that I'm gonna hold off on the cam upgrades for a while.
Focus on the Exterior and getting all the loose ends tied up.

And doing some more "clean up" work under the hood;
I've managed to hide the HVAC line, and move the injector harness underneath the manifold.
Thinking about moving the CPS wire behind the fuel rail, but worried about if the heat from the head would melt/damage the wires?

Did manage to get a really, really great deal on one thing...
WHOLE black interior, minus upper dash pad and front seats.
for...

my old 2.4 manifold.
I'd say its worth a trade lol

Looking for another shop to paint my spoiler.. $180 seems kinda high for a spoiler...

Sides, yes...IF you ever manage to get your tail over here, lol. .....Before I put them on my car!

Car looks great Josh, it's come a long way since Day 1, I know that for sure!

Your exhaust tip is crooked, and for the love of god paint that spoiler or take it off. Other then that, lower it and there you go

yeah I know lol the roll back driver slammed the back of the car into the driveway, I think thats what started the exhaust leak.
Painting the spoiler is on my to-do list as soon as get my side skirts(along with mirrors).
Way too cold to do anything right now.

DID manage to find where my tranny has been leaking fluid from.. fixed that.
Moved the intake around a bit so it fits better.

Can't wait to get rid of that horrid blue interior(no offense Blu).

Re: Lets try again.. 3rd times the charm right?

I don't have a problem with the blue interior.....except for the lack of the split rear seat, that part I'm not fond of. Too many friends got their stuff jacked because of that. Now if only I could find some a-pillar covers....hmmm...:p
Re: Lets try again.. 3rd times the charm right?

You have factory blue interior? Im sure someone would give their left nut and graphite interior for that.

Im not sure about the graphite interior, but left nut for sure

lol
