Pic request of dash pads that have had material removed and then painted
Wednesday, July 07, 2010 6:04 PM
Hey all!! I wanna do my interior of my cavi and I wanna paint my top dash pad. But I already know what happens when you paint the pads material. Now I know some pol have pulled the material off and smoothed it down and painted it. I'm asking those ppl to post up some pics so I can rlly see how it looks. I'm just concerned that there will be a gap with the top vent cover and where the dash pad meet the dashboard under the windsheild. I know I could also glass it but im verry bad at that and I know fiberglass can crack. So plz post up ur pics and help me out!!!!! Thank alot!!

I dunno what you used when you painted your dash pad but you can use dupli-color vinyl dye and if you do it right it will work great. Its all in the prep though. I had mine done silver and looked great and lasted a couple years before I wrote the car off.

Everyone that has smoothed the dash and painted it...did it with glass.....unless you could the few hacks that sanded the vynil texture down and painted just that lol.

Well I did mine with normal paint, and it held fine I am just curious abt what it looks like. Not everyone has glassed there top pad. Some do just pull of the vynel (SP??) Sanded down there pad took all the glue off and painted that. I just wanna see how that looks after its all painted up and installed. I'm just weighing out my options before any paint touches my interior. And trust me, I know this is all prep work, my last j took me 4 months to finish my dash and it till this day is still beautiful. And that was shot 5 years ago.

Hmm, thanks man, i may have to try this. I have a extra top pad lying around, and i may tear the vinyl off, and see how hard it is to glass the cover, and vent in. Did you do any modifications to the vent, or just mold it in. I ask, bc i know there are clips on the vent cover. Did you just break those off, or what? Thanks man. I really love the way yours came out, and since i have the extra pad, I may try it, and see if mine comes out as nice. Thanks, and keep these pics coming!!

i doubt anyone just pulled the vynal off and painted it because you would have horrible gaps all around the entire thing, you have to fiberglass it to thicken it back up so it all looks right.

thats all i did jason, no fiberglass around the edges to thicken it up and i dont have any gaps.

Mike, as for the center defrost vent, i pushed it down so the clips attached to the dash, screwed it in to the stock location, then fiberglassed it right in. done. As per the 2 other small vents on the sides, i just left them in the dash and fiberglassed right over them.

hope this helps bud

really, i guess the cavaliers covering is thinner then the sunfires then, on the sunfires the stuff is about 1/8" thick if not a little more.

Tweed wrap FTW... the trend is coming back and less work

Knapp did it right by leaving in the center defrost vent.

Mike, the dash was out of the car when i did the work. if you can, as your laying down your fiberglass to mold everything in as its drying put it back in the car so it stays its shape. the first dash i did like 5 years ago didnt fit worth @!#$ because it lost its shape.

Jason, its not as thick as ya think lol

Matt- always keep the center defrost vent! the first dash i did i fiberglassed over the defrost vent, what a mistake! lol

But yeah, so apply the glass, put it back into the car, let it dry, pull out sand down, and a little.body filler or no??? Then prep and paint? Sound like I Got it so far??? Again sorry for the questions, but vertigo it directly from someone who has doe it before is tons better then guessing. Thanks tons man!!!
