Hey! I finally got my "new" car, a 1996 Cavalier, 2.2 OHV, auto.
needs, a lot of work, but the price was right, and since this is a learning project, I'm gonna be looking into every little piece anyways.
..oh, and I'm also putting the engine in the middle... if I can muster up the curage to tear apart the interior.. (the int. is the nicest part of this car :p
and why name this thread "Wake up little suzie" ?
becouse the car is named suzie. (it looks like a suzie) and it has a habit of starting up randomly when the doors are open (no need to touch anything).. and there's no brakes :p
here she is :
shure, it has some "experience" on the bottom, but hey, it's a start, and besides the giant hole in the muffler the engine runs nicely.
your post makes me wanna punch babies.
I @!#$ love the bungie cord battery hold down... thats just classic!
Good night..........holy rust batman.
i hope that was very cheap... like a hundred bucks and a case of beer cheap.
87 Firebird
All stock...........lol.

even that would have been alcohol abuse.
so let me get this straight, you bought it hoping to convert it to a mid engine, rwd car? your sig says exactly what im thinking right now...
I have seen cavalier in the junkyard that are in better condition...
But in hindsight that is the perfect car to chop up. It is soooo rotted out that if the swap doesnt work then it is not like you ruined a good car. Only thing i would do is if the swap is a success, i would buy a better cav and do it again.

call me a rust nazi but that thing has no holes to be seen so what is wrong with it not all of us can buy a california car some of us(in canada)have to work with what we got just wirewheel and rockgaurd the @!#$ outta it
(Thank you mod. for moving this)
EcoCav : trust me, that's one of the better things on this car :p
blue02zee24: yup, I'll see if I can get some daytime pics tomorrow after work. and yes, steel doesn't like salt :p
randizzle: pretty close, only make that A&W Combo meal instead of a case of beer :p
cannon fodder: =D *puts protective gear on baby*
blucavvy: ^.^
Tinkles: really? what junkyard is this? :p and yes, that's why i choose a cavi. cheep. and no, i wouldn't do it again, I'd sell it and get a better car :p (no offense, cavi's are fun drive's, but not for me)
Trevor Mullins: true, other then the rocker panel and exhoust, the rust has not penetrated that deeply, and since the whole exhaust system (cept maybe the cat) is being tossed, and rockers are an easy fix, I have no problem with this car... cept for the fact it's possessed >.>
hopefully I can move it into the garage tomorrow, and I'll Have more pics then too. the goal is to have it completely stripped by the end of the week.
cheers!
Nick.

Well, I'm curious, so I'm watching. An RWD conversion has always been in the back of my mind since I bought my cav....though I wanted it FR not MR. Either way, sounds like a lot of work but could be worth the outcome.
Maybe get a junkyard Eco or LD9 for more power? Or is this OHV set for boost in the future?
mid engine in a cavy hmmmm. I guess the darwin theory will play out.
good luck. Have you even thought about how your going to keep the engine temps and fumes out of the cabin of the car?
Honestly if you are wanting to get some experience stripping down a car then this is a good one to do so. However once its stripped, haul that thing to the wrecker instead of spending money and time trying to figure how to do a mid engine conversion in a rust bucket.
Slide81: nah, at most I might put a turbo on it with low boost (and a rebuild)
Tyler Lemburg: I shall kick Mr. Darwin, and his theory too!! (and yes, I have some Theory's of how to keep it cool and well ventilated)
CLC + yellow22 : for what?
Chris B.: but where's the fun in that??
ok, Update time! (small update.. I got distracted by guitar hero.. and it's not in the garage yet.
What the suspension is like now: (sorry for the upside down/sideways pics)
How its gonna be (probably)
(sorry to the owner of this pic, I could not find any user name belonging to it so I'm borrowing it for reference purposes)
Firewall goes here: (I measured, so I should have pleanty of room, especially since the Rad. is gonna stay in the front)

Its not rust, its HOODRIDE!
Seriously though, I really REALLY hope you paid less than $250 and a back rub for that.
Im all for a fixer upper, but anytime there is suspension rust, I'm out.
If you have to cut your losses on the car, (which I hope you don't) do it quick, the rust is eating away valuable weight for the scrap yard. lol.
But I've turned a few cars in CLOSE to this bad shape, so I am sure you can make it driveable. Just please, for your own sake and the sake of others, don't drive it until that suspension's addressed.

I live in Canada, you'll be hard pressed to find any daily driver older then 3-5 years without suspension rust, I've seen far worse then this on cars that are on the road. but no worries, I have to change the whole suspension setup anyways for this conversion, I was hoping i didn't have to, but turns out I probably do. so yes, it will be addressed
thanks for your concern

LOL this forum gets better each day.
Honestly, not much has changed since the last time I visited (about a year ago)... And then even the 3 years since I've owned a J. Its not a good thing, but it's not entirely bad either. I mean, it could only get worse, but hasn't gotten too bad.
...
That's what I was thinking. Looked like it sat in a shallow river for some time.
...
I would like to be the first to say that this is never going to happen.
Bye.
