My new car (finally!)
Thursday, July 23, 2009 10:30 AM
Well I finally am at the place where my car is. Thus I went out today and bought some stuff to put in it when it is nicer outside. I got some pics. Its a bare stock 1997 Chevy Cavalier LS, with the 2.2L. 125,573 miles as of right now. The 3 speed auto was rebuilt 1 year and 3,200 miles ago. Got new stuts last month, cople years ago it got an entire new frontend practically. New tires. (Goodyear Assurance Tripletred 195/65/R15). Its in pretty good condition for a 13 year old car. I went out to advance today (they are having a special deal on Valvoline oil and Purolator oil filters. 5 quarts of oil with purone filter for $18) and bought... Found out the spark plugs have only been in it for 25k miles so going to wait a while to replace them. (they are the OE type ACDelco plats)

5-quarts Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic Blend 10W-40
Purolator PureOne Oil Filter
Purolator PremiumPlus Air Filter
Seafoam Cleaner
Sylvania XtraVision Headlight-bulb- 2 pack

It's my grandfathers old car. He's selling it to us for $750. That rug is to keep muddy shoes off his floor lol. In acoupla days he's gonna help me change the oil in it and everything. Just noticed the Valve cover gasket is leaking, so gonna try to replace that too. Other than that I dunno if I'm gonna do all that much to it. I'll certainly think about it, and I'm open to suggestions.

Very nice, and for $750, I would just leave the car as is and enjoy driving it. Could help you to put money away towards a fun project wether it be another car, or a motorcycle, or even anything else you would be interested in.

You sound like a beginner when it comes to cars; don't be intimidated by the 2200 motor. It's pretty much cake to work on.

So just out of curiosity, are all the cars in your profile actually yours? Putting in mom and dad's cars just ain't right, son

Hah those guys over at Bobistheoilguy just emphatically told me for new york I should be using 5W-30 not 10W-40 for winter cold starting, lol. Eh, I'm going to cedar point today I'll go out to advance and exchange the oil in a couple of days. And I know its pretty clean, he has taken good care of it. And about the Cassette deck, he has one of those CD/Cassette adaptors I can use with my CD Player/ipod/phone.

Got a picture of the completely stock pre 98' 2.2L OHV. 125,781 miles as of right now. Lovin it. It's not nearly as slow as I was afraid it was going to be. It had been a while since I'd driven it. Supposed to do the Oil change tomorrow. Have to run to advance in the morning to pick up the VC gasket. Should be an easy fix for that.

Dam thats a clean car for the age! I would leave it as is, but if you do anything to to it since it's a 3speed ohv, I would steer clear of power mods as they really don't do jack unless you really spend some cash on a build or swap motor/trans our otherwise I would only do rims/ suspension as it will make turns and daily driving more enjoyable. Enjoy the car and don't hesitate to ask questions or pm people for help.

UPDATE: Done some work on it so far. Switched to Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic Blend 10W-40, Purolator PureOne oil filter, Purolator Premium Air filter, got a new Air intake Hose (old one was cracked and destroyed at the TB connection), replaced valve cover gasket, did a drain and fill of the transmission to Valvoline Dexron VI Full synthetic, replaced spark plugs with OEM ACDelco plugs. Put a can of R-134a Stop leak into the cooling system, along with some Dupont Suva R-134a referigant since the A/C compressor shaft seal was leaking. Running great now, the new ATF really helped the shifting feel. Now shifts are firm and crisp, but smooth. Doesn't burn oil anymore, and acceleration is fast enough. A/C really bogs it down though. Oh well. Cleaned up the inside, and bought some Chevrolet rubber floor mats from K-Mart to stick in. Looks alot better now, will take some more pics tomorrow. For now, here are some engine pics. These are from when i had the valve cover gasket off a couple weeks ago to replace the gasket. Since switching oil, I do have a loud tappet at idle and low speed. But you know what they say, a tappy tappet is a happy tappet. Anyway, this is from when it was running Pennzoil Yellow Bottle Dino. I also cleaned up the engine bay some. Will get a pic tomorrow.

You do know this is a bad thing to do to a motor, right?

You do know this is a bad thing to do to a motor, right? GM calls for 5W-30; there's no reason for you to deviate from that on a stock Cavalier.

The Chevrolet dealership put in 10W-40 at the oil changes because of it's "High mileage" And it runs perfectly fine. My grandfather said with 5W-30 there was alot of tappet noise. And besides, there is really not much difference between 10W-40 and 5W-30. It runs better than ever on this oil. Check out Bobistheoilguy.com, and you will learn all about it. According to them, it will work excellently, except possibly during our cold NY winters, it might have a little trouble starting.

Well, that's the problem right there; and again, it boils down to the motor not being equipped for that oil. If there's problems with the engine, don't mask them with a heavy oil...fix'em.
