hi guys!
yes my car is still alive (for those who have been asking)....
ive been slowing biding my time gathering parts over the past few months for my spring progress on my white 98 z24. here are some pictures of the stuff ive gotten and a little progress thereafter. ill be adding to this every time i get something done.
up first we have MDF 4x6 to 6.5" door speaker adapter plates:
new GM spare tire well cover (im sure you can see why i needed one LOL):
new GM driver side door sill threshold with correct tab for a-pillar molding fitment (last one i got did not have it):
Stainless steel "z24" door sills:
STOCK APPEARANCE white face gauge cluster overlays:
OBX silicone coolant hoses:
Jet 180 degree thermostat:
TTR auto mount:
steel braided front and rear brake lines:
O.E.M. phenolic spacer kit:
mildly ported 96-98 head by pat cleavenger. i still need to have this hot tanked and have a set of bronze valve guides installed. flow bench numbers are as follows:
stock intake @ .100-79.5 CFM, @ .200- 138.2 CFM, @ .300- 211.8 CFM, @ 400-247.1 CFM
ported intake @ .100- 87.2 CFM, @ .200-156 CFM @ .300-229 CFM, @ .400 267 CFM
stock exhaust @ .100- 69.3 CFM, @ .200- 122.4 CFM, @ .300- 134.1 CFM, @ .400- 137.5, @ .500- 137.5 CFM
ported exhaust @ .100- 71.5, @ .200- 134 CFM, @ .300- 157 CFM, @ .400- 163 CFM, @ .500 169 CFM
so... as we can plainly see the stock exhaust is maxed out during or below .300 lift at 137.5 CFM, so what does this mean? yes thats right not even stock cams have a chance with this puny freaking exhaust size.
and with car customs stainless steel valves hand polished by yours truly:
New top end consisting of ported 96-98 head, fel-pro head gasket, fel-pro intake manifold gasket, GM 99-02 egr-less exhaust manifold gasket, and various other fel-pro gaskets:
Miller performance modified LD2 (lo) 2.3 intake camshaft with new GM (ac delco) lifters:
InnovatE xd-16 wideband gauge kit with lc-1and column gauge pod:
and the progress so far.... i know its not much but i work slowly and do things right.
got my MDF speaker adapter plates sprayed with undercoating and began the process of getting things installed when i realized hmmmpf.... well now the ebay ad that claimed these would ALSO work for 5 1/4 speakers was false because they did not even come close. so... i ordered a new 6.5" kenwood component set to fit in them instead. also got some more extreme dynamat coming so i can stick it to the inside of the door as well as XTC foam baffles for behind the speakers so moisture and dust doesnt ruin them.
used 3M brand undercoating spray:
before with the stupid metra 4X6 to 5 1/4 adapter plates... these direct the speaker up towards the listener which is good on paper but make it so the surround on the speaker hits the inside of the freaking door panel. hence why i wanted to try something else...

Junk.
Looking good Brad. I think I can tell what motor that intake cam tower came from haha.
very nice pile of parts! how much does the silicone coolant hoses run? never seen it before!
I'm interested to see those hoses installed. I have been thinking about a set myself. Why a 180 stat?

Love the door sils, nice amount of parts, but I want to see some work done on the black Z

thanks man! and yes... the cam was originally in brian's car then it went to the mark's brothers and i got it from them. i know its not the ho spec one like ive wanted for years but i simply had to make do. and its fine... now i'll truly have a 'twin cam' because both camshafts will have .375 lift.

hahaha im only showing the parts related to whats pertinent to this year's progress. turbo will go on eventually. but when i think i myself and the car are ready for it. i only bought the kit because i did not want it to slip away so i said screw it and got it. if you recall it needs a ton of work before its ready to bolt on a car, remember?

thank you. iirc they were like $43 shipped. head right over to ebay. they're always on there.

plan is to get them on the car shortly. i'll have install pictures in this thread. well i cant remember for the life of me the temp rating of a stock thermostat (190?) but i remember buying this one because i needed a new one but also decided i wanted my engine to run a tad cooler.

Please get a GM Timing cover gasget! That light blue just looks like crap in the bay with everything else black. This kinda makes me want to get my project going again since I've not sold anything yet. Keep it up.
brad. those look like the EXACT same speaker brackets i bought off ebay. and well. they are junk. mine started falling apart and still do. they were fine for a bit but after a while i took the door apart and the speaker rings were seperating from the adapter. i hate them. and will be getting the metra ones when i think about it. otherwise. great progress. im jeleous
would you happen to have contact info for miller performance??? i tried googling them, 5000 miller performance places came up. thanks
I want to see those hoses installed.

I have had the hoses for a few years now. Love them except they didn't have black when i ordered mine

trey- i 100% agree and it was already ordered last week. i hate the blue as well but since i didnt have the gm one i just used the fel-pro one to get my point across basically LOL.
wojo- im using extra long screws so they dont come apart. plus with the undercoating i dont see them falling apart. but i will keep an eye on em. oh and dont get the metra ones. they point the speaker up towards the listener but while doing so it moves the speaker to close to the door panel and it hits. this was the main reason for me switching otherwise they are a nice part.
ztowatyfo- miller performance is actually todd miller (protomec) on here. he does not have the ability to do the cam modding any longer and will tell you exactly that when you ask. believe me... i tried. and his website is millerperformance.com iirc.

Where you get that column pod from??
Looking good, keep it up!

I have to give you props on 2 things.... first the new interior parts, not often people maintain and modify, usually they spend everything they can on aftermarket parts and neglect (or just spray paint) anything that's stock. And second would be actually flow benching a head, going to town with a grinder in your garage and claiming it's better based on nothing FTL.
any updates on the condition of those cams?
GMR has got nothing on this
nice man! where u get those Z24 door sills?
Nice batch of parts!! I'm curious, will you let me know how you like those speaker adapters along with the foam baffles. I want to pick up some of the foam baffles for both my front and rear speakers, but have heard mixed reviews about them. Anyway, great progress man.
This thread sucks
hah
Whaa happened to "i work so slowly, a build thread would be pointless im sure."
lol.
Looking good though Brad, keep it cleeeeeeaaaaaannnnn!
thanks everyone!! i forgot to post my picture of my chrome subframe to lower radiator support brace....
