Well, picked this up from a customer in hopes that I could use on my 01 cavalier that is in need of a trans. I had already put my word that I would buy the car before even seeing it. I was told to expect faded paint, dents, noisy engine, and flat tires. Upon asking what they wanted for it they said to make an offer, it worked out to just $100, I didnt complain. Once seeing it, well, I still think I came ahead but have been thrown 3 steps back. It is a 98 sunfire with all power options, 2.4 engine with 4 spd trans, power sunroof, great interior condition, just needs some cleaning(good steam cleaning, prior owner transported dogs in it) and needs new paint. Biggest problem is the engine has a bad knock and the trans is a 4spd as to my 01 cavaliers 3spd. $100 not bad invest but cant figure what to do. 01 cav is a 4door(need for the family) but trans is out and also recently started smoking around the headers, and is completely base model now power anything. The 98 is older, more miles, engine knock, needs paint, but has all pwr opt and trans is good but is a sedan (kinda sucks with 3 kids and a wife)

Any ideas as what to do let me know. The 01 already has catback exhaust, 17 inch chromes, intake, and stereo upgraded.
pull the fourspeed. and get a new ecu the connectors shuld be tha same and it should bolt right up if you have a 2.4 in the 01.interior you can swap the electrical is all diffrent so you will still have to chose unless you fix both.
2.4's came with 3 speeds??
Well once again it's just the base 01 cav, 2.2 with 3spd. Moneys kinda tight, I know so why buy the sunfire then, just couldnt pass up for $100. Have dreams for both but 3rd kid on the way makes planning kinda hard.
very nice pick up, and the car isnt even that bad except for paint on the outside. but since u say there is a bad knocker problem with the engine, just swap it out for a 2.2 eco if ur lookin to upgrade the fire.

Do what I did... part it out on craigslist and ebay. I bought a junker with a bad engine for $600 once, swapped all the interior into my car and parted it out and in total I got $1300. In your case I'd say, swap all the power options over to your 01, part it out to make a profit (hell sell one thing for $101 you made a profit) then call a local junk yard and they will usually but the rest of the car and pick it up for $50-$100 cash!

It can be a lot of work, but really, since you only spent $100 on it anyway, I'd say pull and sell parts that you don't need. Make the car pay for itself
dude what you should do is sell me the rear bumper (with brackets), the driver fender, the side skirts (with clips that go attached to the car) and both license plate bulb assemblies

How bad is that knock? i had one in my 2.4 when i bought it from the dealer (got replacment) .Come to find out it was a wrist pin. Off the top of my head arent 2.4's known for wrist pins and spinning #2 bearings? Correct me if im wrong.
