Was getting on an onramp the other day, not paying attention took a pot hole by suprise, sounded like the subframe got ripped out. Once on the highway noticed the car wanted to pull right and left abrubtly when going in and out of power. This is what I found, the front drivers control arm bolt sheared off completely in the subframe.
Notice the difference in bolt sizes from left to right.
This is what ruins your trip to the track and a chance to showup all your cobalt buddys.
<begin rant>
Upon seeing this I was sooooo pissed, to make matters worse the hilljack junk yard down the street wanted 25 dollars for a used bolt when I drove there.(after they quoted me 5 dollars on the phone) - I told them to go fu#% themselves and that I would never return, then they tried to retort saying since they had to pull it that the subframe bolts were always rusted in and hard to remove. I drove an hour out of my way to a U-Pull it yard, 5 minutes in the yard I had the bolt out + 3 extras, Final bill 7.50 + Gas, but it was worth telling Cletus and Billybob to f' themselves after lieing to me on the phone. Anyways...
So how did i get the bolt out, I decided drilling it out would be next to impossible, w/ 10 grade bolt. After 15min of staring at it pissed off i realized i could take an old socket and beat it over the opposite end of the bolt sticking out in the boxed in side of the subframe (where the bolt sticks through the nut which is welded into the internal bulkhead of the subframe) I got it on there real well tapping it with a hammer small enough to fit into the boxed side of the subframe, then was able to get the bolt out by ratcheting it forward. The new bolt went in just fine and all was well again
Wondering if anyone else has had this problem, Im guessing wheelhop could maybe cause this too.

Holy crap that sucks, a pat on the back though for that garage engineering! I bet that gave you a great sence of accomplishment!
I have always wanted to tell Junkyard workers where to stick it too!
holy crap!
do you remember where exactly it happened? I don't know how it is by you but some places you can report it to the city and they pay to cover the damage (I knwo if you arguee enough in Chicago you can get them to pay for a tire blow out casue by a pot hole.) It may not result in anythign but its worth a shot. Maybe you can get an alignment paid for by them. Double check your tire, make there is no impact break/bubble on the sidewalls somewhere, I'm surprised it took out a bolt without taking out a tire.
that car deserves a better driver.
i agree on that one z yaaaa
hahaha

Your poor car doesn't deserve altezzas, and you've obviously never been to Cincinnati.
Dark,
Ive been through this once before its honestly not worth fighting although I get what your saying. If it had been been an expensive rim or something I would have been more upset but steelies seem to have survived this round.

.
that happened to me too... on 2 bolts lmao...
when I would nail the gas my whole pass. tire would actually move towards the front of the car it was bad.

I do not think this had anything to do with solid mounts.

Its pretty wicked dangerous and scary, when boost hit the whole car shifted over about half a lane.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure it's just pure coincidence. It was probably already starting a while ago. I've heard on more than one occasion of control arm bolts coming loose, and I had it happen myself on a fairly new Cav.
The solid mounts would really have nothing to do with putting a shearing force on that bolt, but if you did have an alignment issue, that could possibly have been a factor.
Well its good to know I'm not the only one I guess,,, Ive never heard of this happening up until now. I replaced both sides (might have been damaged from wheel hop like you might suspect), the same bolt is used to hold in the lower mount.

Around here our on ramps do not have pot holes. Don't you guys have toll booths out there anyway. That would be messed up if you pay to use the road and it is not well maintained. I have only been out to Ohio a few times and I do not remember pot holes on the on ramp though. Either way you have got to expect someone to give you crap for not paying attention and hitting a pot hole.
FORGET GIRLS GONE WILD WE HAVE GOVERNMENT SPENDING GONE WILD!
There are no toll roads anywhere near Cincinnati, the closest ones are either in Cleveland or Chicago.

I still don't get the point if its something other than someone trying to make a lame attempt at bashing me.
If you drive your car, eventually something will break. Modifying always speeds up the process, I see it as a learning experience.

ok, ill drop the bashing... but i just dont see how somebody that has been given the GIFT of a boosted cavalier can let such a stupid thing happen to their car. i mean i realize that pot holes are sometimes hard to see, but i mean come on...lets face it, the size of hole needed to mess your suspension woulda had to have been MASSIVE. i really think it could have been avoided.

Wasn't a gift I paid for it myself and built it myself using all the knowledge I've found on JBO, other places and my own experience, and no my eyes aren't always on the road 100% of the time, they should be but once you start tuning by yourself you'll know what I'm talking about.
