Re- Finished Some Disgusting Rims.

Well I got these 16 inch rims from a friend for free. They were silver then painted green then primered black. None of which were done correctly. So I obviously had some work ahead of me. Anyways on with the pics. (They are in order from before to after)

Added a pic of my bike for the hell of it. just washed it.

I need to do a final polish on the lip still. Just incase you were going to ask.
I'll post up pics of the rims on the cavy once I get new tires and my new back bumper.
c/c welcome.

very nice job, it looks like it was supposed to be like that from new, I am impressed the lip turned out so well, I expected it to look like crap.
I have to sand down and paint some winter rims soon, and that will entail filling some scraps with some bondo I guess, need something to make it nice and flush, and a bunch of primer too, I hope they turn out as good as yours,
very nice

When you primer, use filler primer and you'll be suprized how many scratches go away. I polished my entire bike with the help of my friend who owns a polishing shop. So I've had some practice and good training. But it's not hard to do. Thanks for the comments.

You should do a step by step for what you did so some members "me" can see what you actually did and what you used to get them to come out like that. Especially the lips I would like to make mine come out like that.

Here's what i did to get the rims the way they are now:

1. I used a paint stripper to get the rims down to the original metal. This took a lot of sanding and scrapping but it worked. I recommended if you have access to a sandblaster, use that.
NOW AS A DISCLAIMER, YOU CAN SAND THE LIPS USING STEPS 7-11 BEFORE YOU RPIMER IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTBLE DOING THIS AFTER YOUR RIMS ARE PAINTED.
2. After I stripped the rims and sanded them down; getting rid of the imperfections, I primered the rims. If you need to fill in any gaps and scratches, this is where you would do that.
3. After the primer cured, I wet-sanded the rims with 600 grit paper. After that was dry, I re-primered the rims one last time. Then I wet sanded the rims with 600 paper again. The only reason I did this was I need the primer to fill in some scratches.
4. Then I painted the rims with some Rim paint I got at pep boys. I really love this paint. It’s probably the best spray can paint I have ever used. (DUPLICOLOR HIGH PERFORMANCE WHEEL COATING.)
5. Within one hour of base coat, I cleared the rims with the same paint brand clear coat.
6. Then I let the rims sit under some plastic covers I made to keep dust off of them for about a week.
7. Next I polished the lips.
8. Now I already stripped the lips when I stripped the rims. You want them to be at the bare aluminum.
9. Next I starting the sanding. I started with a 220 grit to take off any paint spots and wheel coating. After I got an even scratch on the entire lip, I moved to another paper.
10. After the 220 I used a 440 grit paper. You are going to notice that the scratches start to get smaller. I sanded the lip to a uniform scratch.
11. Now the wet sanded with 600 grit paper. I got a nice shinny metal with this paper. (If you don’t get a smooth surface you can keep going up papers til you get a scratch free surface) I normally would go to a 1000 paper, but the 600 did the job.
12. At this pint all you have to do is get an aluminum polish and buff the lip. Get any polish you want just make sure it’s a paste, NOT A LIQUID. I HATE liquid polish. I just used a rag and applied in circles. Do the rim in 4 equal sections. You want it to turn gray/ black. Just follow the instructions on the polish. Then I buffed it off. if you can use an electric buffer, it will look closer to chrome. I wanted it to be a little more suttle so i did it by hand.
13. And that’s it.
14. I hope this helps. I’m not good at being very specific.

Sounds good but I dont think that I will be able to get the lip look back because my friend sandblasted the wheels and it took the machined look away.

Looks great!! I'm guessing those were on some Honda based on the tire size!

Looks like a set of Sendel Type S-76. I had a set of chrome ones back in the day.

Very nice wheels.

Haha. That's probably exactly what rims I have. The BBS center caps are from some other rims. I don't have caps for the ones I painted.
