As some of you know, we had a problem with Nicks car this weekend. His car overheated when he was stuck in traffic on the 401 Friday night. Turns out that the fan motor decided to take a @!#$ on him. In the process, it pretty much screwed up both headgaskets. (The white smoke out of the tailpipes when I started it yesterday gave that away.) So today, I got started and pulled the heads off, tomorrow morning I will be taking them to the machine shop to check for warps and cracks. Here are the pics from today.
This was us attempting to make the Golden Mile show...
I forgot the camera, so my dad brought it by for me, I was at this point when he got there, and before you ask, no it wasnt neccessary to pull the whole front end off, but it sure made life easier.
The parts that had already been removed.
I think the fan motor deserves one of these...
Both heads removed.
Getting ready to go to sleep for a couple days.
And this is how she sits for now.
I will keep everyone updated, I will probably be able to pick the heads up Friday morning before work and start the re-assembly this weekend.
Wow, that really sucks. I only saw it yesterday and rode in it. Now thats it! You surely wasted no time!
Hope you made it back home ok last night!

Once I got on the highway I was good, in traffic I shut it down at every light.
Gotta love the ease of PUSHRODS!
get it back together.
that sucks. glad to see you're getting right on it. with the way you're moving shouldn't take long to have it back up and running. hope the heads are fine or need just a mild milling to smooth out a slight warp at most.
Me too. Im moving fast because I really want to get Nick his car back with time to enjoy it for the rest of the season.
While it is here I am going to be doing a few other things aswell. Fix a pesky Missfire, wire in a fan bypass switch, vacuum bleed the clutch, rewire the alternator, and make it look nice again

While that's out, I'd recommend getting metal UIM/LIM gaskets (see 60degv6.com for more info on those)... unless those were swapped in already.
Did the fan not kick on at all cause I seem to be having the same issue running the single fan
The metal gaskets are being used.
The fan wasnt running unless you tapped it, then it turned on. There was power going to it, but nothing happening.
Those motors are a blast to work on.
I got a 3100 Beretta waiting for metal UIM/LIM gaskets right now.

Well the heads are at the machine shop, should know the state of them by this afternoon then pick em up tomorrow before work.
I need a Fan Myself... it Over heats everytime i sit. but then when i drive its fine.
Got word from the machine shop. Each head has 2 spots of pretty bad corrosion and needs to be re-welded.
I pick em up tomorrow morning and then back to work tomorrow night.
Good luck... and yea, metal gasket for sure. GM's 3100/3400 series is pretty notorious for crappy GM head gaskets.

I need my garage back! lol
More updates and pics later.
Ahhh, the good ole days...I remember driving to work at 6am and having the car jump up to 260* sitting, even in 10 degree weather. Even a caspers fan switch,180* tstat, and some cooling system adjustments in the pcm wouldnt help at all. As stated make sure you use the upgraded metal felpro gaskets, otherwise youll be tearing most of it apart again sometime down the road. Shoulda done a 3500 top end
Good job using the green stuff instead of dexcrap.
Greetings,
I new to the forum so any help would be greatly appreciated. Just yesterday my fan motor took a crap. I would like to know if I have to take the radiator out in order to replace it. How difficult would it be? I've never done it before but I want to learn and save money.

just so you know.. you have just jacked this guys thread. if you have questions about your own car . i suggest you make a new post about it., instead of thread jacking. this is good way to upset people.
but on another note. can we have an update fellas"?
supposed to be getting the car back tonight, darren was leaving toronto to come out here with it and a heater core hose blew, so hes fixing that and then heading out to swap cars. hopfully all good from here, seems like every time the car goes to leave toronto something breaks

Mine does fine with a single fan. Dunno what setup you're using, but I have to stock J-body fan (thought you did too?) Maybe just set your turn-on temps a bit low, and go for a cooler thermostat to help. Also that engine cover...... that's why I dont like it. I pulled the one off my GTP to help keep the supercharger a bit cooler. Not much but a little helps I suppose.
Darren & RSF - It seems like there might be a time constraint on it for sure, but that looked like every bit of a good reason to do the 3500 top end swap.
Hope you get it going again. I assume now it's down for the oil pan thingy?
