Little project Im attempting...

Ok..im going to attempt this project again. This is what i got done so far. This piece sits right between the shifter and center comparment armrest. Im goin to glass it for my remote to my cd player to fit in there. I had attempted this a while ago but didnt turn out good. Anyways. on with the pics

Cardboard cutout a lil wider than remote cause resin is gonna be a lil thick on there..

I had fabricated a piece to sit even with the bottom of the remote to fill the rest of the hole..

I had to cut away at the sides to make them wider..

Its far from finished but its turning out good so far..Let me kno what u think

the only thing i can think of, is if you will be adding glass, make sure its not snug fitting now, or when you glass it the thickness of the class will not make it fit at all. just take that into consideration. other than that, its a pretty hot idea. somthing i was thinking about, but i dont want to move my window switches.... hahaha

Yeah thats why the carboard cutout is bigger around than the remote..Im actually just laying resin over the whole thing with out the fiberglass matting. It sits in there loose so it should be perfect when the resin dries

You need to make it so that it is angled up towards the cd player so that you could actually use it while it was in its holder. I think that would be pretty cool!

laying resin over duct tape? That definently wont be strong enough. Fiberglass resin needs something to soak into to give it strength. You would probably be better off just sectioning of the top half of that change holder and just rip appart somefiberglass matt and mix with some resin and just stuff it in there, then trace the shape of the remote on to the fiberglass and dremel out the shape of it.

Like i said, its far from done and there will be a material layed over it. Plus i dont want to lay glass, trace the remote on then dremel cause i want to be able to pull the remote out and it be nice and smooth underneath

Holy crap that's one huge remote!!! My Alpine remote is like 2 inches long. Anyway, good luck with the project!

I was thinking of doing that with my pioneer remote. Except here's my idea.

-Fiberglass the remote into the drivers doorpanel (in a very comfy location of course).

-Pull the IR-LED out of the remote and place it in the center console, pointing at the cd player.

-Take two wires and fish them through the door panel, under the carpet and into the center console, and reconnect the led to the remote.

-Try to hide the fact that the LED was pulled out.

-finish fiberglassing

-enjoy

You're welcome to steal my idea

I would have added power windows to that area.

I just glassed mine into the arm rest. It sat a little high but I fixed that problem by trimming out below the controller a little bit where the velcro was. Your idea seems a little better so your arm wont hit the controller. Looks good!

make sure you have plenty of room lay a layer of fiberglass down with cloth. let it cure, smooth the edges, take your remote wrap in nicely in masking tape, wax the tape down really good. throw some filler in the opening then press the remote down into the opening so its nice and flat and the excess filler oozes out. remove any excess and then when it dries it should fit like a glove. also dont forget to make it deeper then you think since it will get built up with the f/g and filler

thats a pretty bad ass idea, what about the acctual body filler cracking out tho? when i was debating on this idea, i was just going to do the same, minus instead of body filler, make a mold of the remote and then build everything from there.

Def a good idea..im sure the filler will be fine without any cracks. No stress is really being put on the piece when its in the car. Im not going to use a whole lot of filler. I have a lot of sanding to do on the resin tho to widen up the cutout for the remote. i actually thought about trying to sand the bottom smooth as best as i can, then add a little filler to the side walls and the rest of the out side that way my remote doesnt sit up any higher.
I wasnt going to use any body filler at all and just sand on the resin real good but there are alot of uneven spots so this is a must. And its def really really tough to sand resin perfectly smooth.

Anywho, resin is dry and bout to be sanded on. This is not turning out too bad for only being my second glass job. Thanks for the advise sndsgood

Yea sure I can but:
1. I hate there being this lil change holder right there when i dont even use it..I would set my remote in it slanted down in it cause thats the only way it fit.
2. I like things like "attention to detail"
3. I havent seen a coin holder used for that yet
4. I think it will look good

Anyways, heres more progress I made on it..

I still have lots to do on it..The remote fits a lil loose in there and thats exactly what i was going for so the filler could be applied to the sides. It sits a tiny bit high but thats ok..But hey, if i screw this up, the coin holder is only 4 bucks from the dealer..LOL

Just dont change headunits. Or at least get one that uses the same remote

Re: Little project Im attempting...

like said above its only $4 for hte coin holder, so its not that bad if he did change head units. and like said above. i Love projects like this, the little details. i have sooo many "little details" to attend to my self. like getting the front end on the damn car... haha anywho keep up the progress man it looks pretty good
