starting fiberglassed dash
Tuesday, November 21, 2006 12:57 AM
Well after getting tired of the cold garage and torpedo and fumes from fiberglass, i went to the local shop to get a quote for a glassed dash ( just the top piece) in my fire. wanted three guages fiberglassed in front of / under the pass air bag, youll see in the pics. Its the most expensive shop around my part of michigan but they do very very nice work. I took it not because i cant fiberglass but because i felt it might be worth paying to have it done, i took pics of the car and dash there as well as the dash itself. After getting my autometer sponsorship for the entire line of ultralite guages ( 15 ) i have to fabricate a lot to make the guages not look tacky (sp)?. so just to glass the top and add 3 guages they wanted 2500 + as a estimate. I think it made me laugh so hard that i came home tonight and did it myself after i swore that i wouldn't! Anyway here are the pics so far.

Oh ya and the duct tape was for the fiberglass mat to lay over from the missing air bag cover as i didn't have anycardboard for the gap.

the doors look flawless and i can see them charging 1000 per door. but those doors are more labour intense then your dash would be so it sounds like they just upped the price on you because they didnt want to do the work.

for the dash I wouldnt have set the duct tape on the top I probably would have either went to the junkyard for the air bag cover or taped from the back side and filled it up and gone out and found a piece of cardboard (local mcdonalds recycling bin does wonders)

Sherlock Holmes: its elementary my dear watson

after careful examination of the pics we must conclude it is in fact a 350 Z convertible

Watson: hows did you deduct that

Sherlock Holmes: notice the Z emblem on the door dill, side vent, and floor mats

you prolly could have made life alot easier by just cutting holes in the dash to fit the pvc, but otherwise should look good when completed....also make sure to drill some holes around there to get glass behind it so it will hold good and not seperate from the plastic.

keep it up
