Remote Turbo System COMPLETE!!!!

Ladies and gentlemen. Boys and girls. I give you.............................the FREAK of NATURE:

T3/TO4E 57 trim compressor, .50 a/r compressor housing, .48 a/r turbine housing with a stage I wheel. Coke can for reference:

2" stainless steel piping. TB to IC upper:

TB to IC lower:

IC to turbo pipe #1:

Same pipe, but showing off my neat homemade IC brackets:

Under engine piping:

Subframe piping:

Tack welded and ready for full welds:

Forge Motorsport BOV assembled and ready to go:

First rendition of the turbo/wastegate assembly. The dump pipe for the wastegate was REALLY low to the ground:

Another view:

Yet, another view:

Final rendition of the turbo/wastegate assembly. The dump pipe for the wastegate was moved upward and now connects to the exhaust pipe. LOTS of clearance under the car was gained back. Also, ignore my mockup crappy intake elbow. I had to cut a hole in it at one point for another project and decided to temporarily duct tape it together. I have a brand new elbow on the turbo as I'm typing this:

Wastegate porn:

MUCH better!:

Ceramic painted and finished turbo/wastegate inlet pipe:

Ceramic painted and finished turbo/wastegate outlet to exhaust pipe:

Oil scavenge pump being assembled:

Painted, gasketed, and assembled turbo/wastegate assembly:

More pics to come. Tonight after 7 crazy days of working on the car, I was finally able to take it around the block. Amazingly, the honkin huge turbo spooled up pretty quickly on the rear of the car. Granted, I'm only pushing about 2psi at the moment to make sure everything is peachy before I go any further. The sound of the turbocharger at the rear of the car is bitchin. My car is now an F-15 fighter jet

I'm happy to say that I now own the first recorded proof of a remote mounted turbocharger system on a 3rd gen j-body. YEAAAAAAHHH!!! Sorry....it's been a while since I've had something to gloat about.

Also, I just wanted to say thanks to khturbo.net, Todd Miller, Paul Marchi, Ryan Hoffman, and Jon Fisher for either helping out with the project with some of the little details, or enlightening me with their knowledge.

Like I said, more pics to come. Hell, I'll even throw up a video or two in the near future. Until then, there's a billion more pictures of the entire build process that I started back in December of 2005. Have a look see:

http://www.j-bom.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3871

On Wednesday, I should be receiving some nice mounts and stuff for the piping. At the moment, it's all zip tied up with huge 1/2" thick zip ties just so that I could test the system. I'm also waiting on more couplers and stuff to arrive from hightempsilicone.com. Unfortunately, those won't ship until Tuesday. After everything is all in place, I'll post final pics and vids.a

Also, a lot of people are going to ask why I did this. Here's a couple reasons:

1. Unique. No other 3rd gen has done this, let alone there isn't much of anything else out there that has done a system like this either. STS turbosystems is the only company I know of that does remote mount turbo kits. However, the only 4 cylinder kit they currently sell is a kit for an Acura Integra. Blahh.
2. Stealth. You see absolutely no sign of boost under the hood except for t-clamps.
3. Safety. I'm deathly afraid of torching my car due to a turbo fire. Now that the turbo is at the rear, the exhaust doesn't get hot enough back there to start a flame on its own if the oil system ever leaked.
4. Jet noise. Enough said.
5. Shock factor. I cannot wait to take this thing to the local meets and mess with people. Popping the hood will result in very confused faces and lots of head scratching.

There's plenty more reasons why I did this. This is all I can think of for the moment. I know oil fires don't have a huge chance of happening, but it still makes me want to plan so that it never happens.

Bro - it's been a long time coming. Congrats!!!

How will that ceramic paint hold up?

hopefully the coating holds up. i see rust possibly becoming an issue where its at. otherwise i think its a cool idea. good work.

The ceramic paint sucks. It's just temporary. I'm going to build a stainless turbo/wastegate assembly come this winter.

When I originally started purchasing parts, I didn't have the funds to do the stainless. Now that I do, that will be my winter project.

nice set up, this is the only car that ive seen with a remote mounted turbo setup. ive seen mainly trucks with these setups. very nice

i've seen it done on a few different j's.

even one of the cobalts at last years bash has a rear mount turbo

looks good thou

Ehhhhhhhh...prove it. I'd actually like to see how another person routed their piping. If proof comes, I'll restate and say I'm the first with the system to go public on JBO.

Yes, STS has a prototype kit for the Cobalt. It's not out yet though. I'm thinking they might of scrapped it for the sake of other company interests of lack of public intrest. Whichever. Whatever.

Thanks for the comments so far guys.

the only concern i would have would be the filter getting soaked or getting extremeley dirty fast
unless you plan on only driving it in good weather?

Re: Remote Turbo System COMPLETE!!!!

i think its pretty lame if ya ask me....

jk. thats a sick setup. told ya it would work ! now hurry up and finish yours so we can finish mine! haha

The filter problem will be solved with a K&N snomobile filter equipped with a Snocharger cover. STS uses this on their systems and has taken their cars through huge downpours with no problem.

I also plan on constructing a shield shortly to keep water off of the intake that's being flung up by the tire..

cool beans
is it a noticable power difference at just 2 psi even?
and what do you plan on runnin for psi?
it would be interesting to see if there was a power difference between a traditionally mounted turbo and a remote turbo system, positive or negative.

I can tell you off the bat that there's a negative difference. Remote turbo systems are definitely less powerful than traditionally mounted systems. Spool is a huge factor. You see that my turbine side of the turbo is only .48. Any bigger and the turbo wouldn't spool for ages. The other two factors to spool are the volume in the charge piping and the turbo efficiency lost due to less heat.

Compared to my car without any boost at all, it feels pretty good. I honestly don't want instant power off the line. Too hard to control. With the ramp up this system will give me, I'll have lots of time to hook the car up and then take off like a bat out of hell.

I plan on running around 4-6psi until I finish my built engine. After that, who knows what I'll push it to.

sweet man, i had no idea this was part of what you had cookin all this time I like it, and think you'll get pretty good results. Now crank the boost, get it tuned, and lets see some ET's!

OBX header with no cat. 2.5" stainless T304 system up until the turbo/wastegate assembly.

Like I said, the turbo/wastegate assembly will be finished off in stainless steel this winter.

Re: Remote Turbo System COMPLETE!!!!

ive never had a turbo, but i would think having it were you do would run into the TC itself having problems with rust.

Re: Remote Turbo System COMPLETE!!!!

That is so sweet!! You dont get to see remote mounts very often. I hope I get a chance to check it out soon. I do have a question though. I have always thought that one advantage to a remote mount is that you dont need an intercooler, as the charge pipes run the length of the car, giving plenty of time to cool the intake.. It would probably help spool up without the intercooler. Is this correct? I could very well be wrong, but was just curious!! Congrats on getting it done.

Go Go OG Traction!!
