new trunk setup

so last year when you looked into my trunk you saw this:

not very pretty at all, but sounded good.

so this feburary i got really tired of having no trunk space, and was itching to do some fiberglassing, so after 3 and a 1/2 months of working on it in my spare time (which wasnt much) i came up with this:

note that im not 100% done, i still have to remount the amps so that they're properly centered in the openings.

comments, suggestions, flames, i'll take it all

That is really, really nice. I wish I knew how to do something like that. It almost looks like it came that way stock.

Looks amazing.
May I ask how u did the box?? That's exactly what I want to do with mine but I'm not sure how to get the back made and to get it to clear the arms.

the box i did like this:
started off by masking off the whole area that i wanted to glass, then did a few layers of fiberglass

once i had the desired thickness( about 4 layers all said and done) i removed it and trimed it down to the size i wanted. i then built 2 mdf rings, one to mount the sub to and one to flush mount it. if i where to do it again, i'd make smaller rings, but oh well. i then rough mocked the sub in the rings to see how it would fit in the trunk and once i firgured out the desired angle, i made stilts to hold the rings in place. then i streched some fleece ofer it and got this:

added a few more layers of glass, then bondo'ed it and sanded till my arm felt like it was going to fall off, then repeat bondo and sanding

i got lazy and wanted something druable being a DD, so i carpeted it. if i wanted to paint it, i would've sanded it till it was perfect.

very awesome. i wish they made q forms for both sides of the cavy like the do on trucks and suvs. yes i know the easy route and no customization.

i'd like to do this on both sides of my 02. i hate havin no trunk space.

Thats the best install setup I've ever seen. GM should have done that exact setup as an option.

You should really make another of those and shop it around to a manufacturer....I'd bet that someone would make that as a part for the Cavs.

white raven:
i plan on making a better plug to get a mold from, this one wasnt the best for making a mold off of. tho i am also considering being an a-hole and keeping it a one-off

as for sound quality, yes it changed. going from a big ported box to a small sealed box made a big difference, but i like it. it sounds nice and tight, but smooth. and it plays damn low im really happy with it, considering i didnt even calculate the volume, i just built it to look good lol

james: theres not as much room on the other side, and im happy with the one. plus i have other plans for that empty corner

Great job. Looks better with the carpet anyway.
