Autopower Roll Bar Install
Tuesday, March 14, 2006 11:16 AM
I got my autopower street roll bar today and decided to snap some pics.

This is exactly how it comes right off the truck, no box, no nothing just the bars:

After cutting most of the tape off:

First test fit in the car. It was a pain to get it in there even with the seats removed.

I'll update once I get it fitted up and bolted in.

I think it was about $250 for the bar and I just paid the driver $135.00 COD for shipping. It would be a steal if you lived close enough to pick it up from them.

I Think RK Sport did sell the autopower bars before, I'm not sure if they still do or not.

Cool, but I'm not sure I see the point since the street roll bar they make isn't guaranteed to meet the specs of any race organization. Only the race roll bar they make seems to meet specs of an organization.

Looks neat, but why do you need it if it's not a legal system for racing?

It actually does meet the minimums for what I am using it for. I am racing on a circle track in a stock 4 cylinder class. Here is what it says in our rule book.

Rule 14. A single hoop roll bar accepted, bars must be welded or bolted to the car. Installation subject to technical inspection.

..also it's not a bad start to a full cage if I wanted to do that down the road.

Wow....another AutoPower bar that comes NO WHERE near the roof. Have fun watching your roof collapse if you roll over. Wonder if it's even going to be taller than the seats. Local shop here installed one for a customer, after he purchased it, in a 300ZX. Thing was 4 inches from the roof and didn't clear the top of the STOCK seats...not very safe IMO.

I have it just sitting there right now not bolted up or anything and with the stock seat installed the bar is about 3/4 of an inch higher then the top of my helmet.

only 3/4 of an inch?!?!?!?!?! and your going to trust that if you flip over? Have fun...get used to taking lots of pain relievers. I'm sorry but that is ridiculous. I'd much rather pay a liitle more for a custom piece and have it follow the roof line and give me the clearance I need to feel safe..especially if your racing it all out.

If you go to a short track you'll see plenty of 2G and 3G J-Bodies in the smaller classes.

are there any pre fab rollbars for the j-body that are ihra approved?

^ I've seen 4, 6, and I think 8-point (I think, not sure) cages for J's. If you weld them in correctly (or get them welded in correctly) than it will be IHRA and NHRA approved. Good luck tryin' to get a non-welded bolt-in approved tho, they'll just laugh at ya

I don't think I would trust that bar in a show car even

Actually all of the Autopower 4,6,8 qnd 10 point system are NOT IHRA, NHRA, or NDRA certifiable. I asked the tech inspector at Great Lakes Dragaway (IHRA) and also one of the tech guys from NOPI when I was at WoW. You can even ask Autopower and hear the same thing, that they are SCCA legal but nothing else.

If you want a IHRA or NHRA cage system and are gonna need it due to speed...pay the extra to get a custom one made and welded for your car. Heck spend the extra money and get a Chromemoly cage. Yes its going to be expensive but it will also be 1/2 the weight of a mild steel system.

^ I haven't looked at the Autopower ones. Don't remember where I saw the other ones tho, it was awhile back, it was full weld-in (no bolts whatsoever) mild steel.

Although I like the concept, I'm also a little worried that the bar should be closer to the roof. I don't have any pics of mine with the seats back, but it was quite a bit more than 3/4" higher than the top of the seat.

That worries me....mine worked great when I needed it to, but, as you can see from the pics below, the roof still caved all the way down to the top of the bar.

I know that you put a cage in your car in the hopes of never having to use it, but, as you can see, you never know when you might need it. And you need it to hold up and serve it's purpose if you're going to have it.

^ Ouch!! I never seen those pics before But if you read the OP's response again, he said the bar is 3/4" above the top of his helmet, not the seat Now, whether it was 3/4" to the bottom of the bar, or top of the bar, I dunno b/c he didnt say. I certainly hope for his sake that the bottom of the bar is 3/4" above him
