well i think i went a lil' nutty after seeing my car's almost exact twin at the last car show so i ripped the whole car apart and decided to try to make my own widebody so i could be different from the rest. i'm getting all depressed and thinking about just giving up on this thing. it is fighting me all the way and now somebody told me i have to redu the places i fiberglassed to the car cause i didn't sand all the way to bare metal. should i keep going? or shall i continue?
the 2x6's represent the bottom piece i haven't made yet. and some places like on the door haen't been trimmed on the edges yet.

looking liek it's gonna be different.
as long as the fiber glass isn't on smooth paint and has something to stick too i don't know why you'd have to go all the way down to the metal?
that is an a s s load of fiberglass. Hope you have a lot of time on your hands to sand. Can you say itchy?
I suggest u to complete that...It would look so good! I could already imagine..and front could look so killer if done right....GOOD luck!?Keep us posted!

Ahhhhh! I loved your car how it was....but keep going.
I would definately grind to the metal and use a body panel adhesive to adhere the fiberglass to the car, just dont fiberglass the fiberglass panels to the car. Looks pretty damm good so far.
As for getting discouraged, its all part of modding when going that extreme. I should know, I havent seen my car in 6 months and have run into so many severe problems. Ive thought about just scrapping my whole car since the rear half of the car had to basically replaced. But I dont want 4+ years of work to get hauled to a junkyard if I scrap the project. Id keep going if I were you, youre off to an awesome start, Ive seen alot of widebody projects look like ocean water with a thousand waves, yours looks fairly smooth so far.
1st of all i dont understand why jason's car has made you decide you needed to change yours. lets be honest here... they only make soo many kits for J-bodies; the sunfire is especially limited. a lot of cars are going to look similar. hell, look at Mark's sig in this thread... kinda looks like mine. but who cares... i can say honestly that jason wasnt copying your car, and even if he had, imitation is flattery. there are probably 20+ silver streetfire sunfires that you dont even know about. and besides, jason has an 03+ rear conversion with all sorts of interior custom glass work, its not the same car. I think its silly your giving your car fiberglass rush job just b/c you're frustrated that somebodys car kinda looks like yours...
as for the widebody itself. its not horrible, but you need to slow down and relax. if major work is going to get you flustered maybe you shouldnt do the widebody. i pretty much agree with everything flip said above. Personally... i dont know enough about wild body work to comfortably do projects like that to my car, thats why i dont have that kinda stuff done. think about it all before you go crazy... you had a badass sunfire. dont ruin if it you're not 100% sure you want done what you're about to do.
BTW it wasn't Jason that did this Adam. There is another one that his is talkin' about.
i wasn't talking about only his fire. i'm one of those people that don't want to see the same car that i'm driving right next to me at a stop light.4 sunfires in town with my kit. my car was the first with it here a few years ago and now i just have to stand out again and be different. only way to learn how to do cool things is to try them out i guess.

Re: need opinions please (widebody guys especially
What girls dont know anything about widebody or body work?
Its looks good, but dont rush and take your time. Just like Flip said he has seen alot of people that do it and have waves. I know when I did mine it took 3 months just to get it completely smoothed out to were there would be no waves. Just dont rush it and take your time and it will look good

I told you!
Go pick up a $40 sidegrinder and PLENTY of 36/40 gritt disks and then everywhere you molded the fiberglass gring it down right thru the fiberglass thru the paint back to metal and lay new fiberglass Not to bad if you get the tools!
as for getting it smooth dont even try sanding it and dynaglasing it FIND a custom Boat shop in town its nashville so it should have a few and call em ask if they Gellcoat. if they DO bring the car up there after you get all the panels made and molded and tell em you want all the fiberglass gellcoated and leveld, your probably looking at 200-300 for thw whole car but ITS WORTH IT!
Hit me up on AIM or call me if you have any questions!
it looks good. i would definitly keep going w/ it. if your discouraged about it now, just take a few weeks off from it and relax and go out w/ friends. trust me, when its all done and over w/, it will be well worth it.
yeah that would be quite impressive if he saw my car on saturday and drove back to tennesee and got all that done sunday.
i myself would take it down to bare metal personally. u may not have an issue with it like it is. but i always try to account for the worst case, i'd rather take an extra day or two of work now then to have the thing completly finished and a month down the line u start seeing it cracking on you.

liek everyone said, your car was wicked before. But since you already started you might as well finish. It looks liek you've put a lot of work into it so far. And the first side is alwyas harder then the second, so the passenger side should go on even better.
Either way you have to re-paint the car now, so you might as well make it worth the paint job!

Well, it looks like you are on the right track, but I don't think that the panels are not ready to go on. When you mold fiberglass panels to metal panels you need something that adheres to both, when I did my front fenders I put a backside lip to the fiberglass panel and glued it to the metal fender with fusor (high quality glue used on cars). There is different kinds but the stuff you will need will work great, we use this stuff on putting roof skins on, that way you don't have any welds to clean up and no warping. But anyways glue it to the metal panel and stick screw in it to hold it on, then after it dries you can fiberglass what you want on the outside to make it hold a little better. Now this is how I did it, I don't know how other people do it but I have had no problems and think that it has to be one of the best ways to do it. I also seen that you may have foam in the fenders, the same thing that I did, but I removed the foam after getting the mold, I would hope that you would do the same if it is a expandable foam. Why I say this is that when it gets really hot it will start to expand and push the panel out, which will make it crack or warp really bad. Other than that it is about getting it all straight, I would take it to a body shop for the finishing touches for sure.
Me if I could go back I would have never did my car like I'm doing it now but at the end it will pay off, it just matters how long you want to spend on the car and how much time, money isn't that bad but time you are looking at a while. I'm almost going on a year on my car and hope to get it done soon but Im doing headlight and taillight conv. and motor build with turbo and some other things.
I have a question for you, are you cutting the stock rear fender well out? or maybe the front as well?
Anyways if you plan on doing it good luck and you can ask me if you need anything.
