Z24 Speed 99: As some of you know from the Audio/Electronics forum, I recently bought a 15" Kicker solo-baric L7 sub, and also a JBL 1200.1 amplifier. I decided I would build a fiberglass enclosure for it over my spring break. I spent 3 days getting it this far, and this post will be updated daily with new pics of the progress. The enclosure should be done as soon as thurs or fri, and should be painted this weekend! So check back!

Cutting out the MDF sub ring

duct taped the spare wheel well and glassed it up to make the bottom shell of the enclosure

Another pic of the bottom shell

Cuttin a lower ring to connect to the bottom shell, then the fabric from the top of the enclosure will staple to the bottom ring.

MDF ring on dowels and sitting in the bottom shell to find mounting place.

Another shot of the MDF ring placed in spot

The awaiting sub

Lower ring and Sub ring are set in place.

Another shot

Lower shell

Traced.

Then Cut.

MDF lower ring was mounted to lower shell and fiberglassed together from the inside.

Trunk got a coat of spray on rubber to deaden noise and keep the enclosure from sliding or rattling on the metal.

Cloth stretched around sub ring and lower ring.

Another shot.

And another.

Spread the resin on the cloth for a solid base to start glassing on.

More resin

All resin'd

Another shot.

where the two fiberglassed pieces meet at the lower ring will be built up very strong once the upper fiberglass piece has a few layers of glass.

Last shot for the night! More pics tomarrow!

you should have done some research about the recommended box size for that sub. i did a similar box for my 18" jl and it wasnt enough space so on the first bass drop i blew the cone right off of it. the actually size of my box for my 18 takes up damn near my whole truck.....i can only assume that a 15" would be similar.

i'm agreeing with almost everyone else--that looks like it's gonna be too small. I had a Kicker solo-baric 15" L5 and the box was around that big and it didn't sound very good. I think I checked out the recommended size for it, and like mattdiggity said it was gonna take most of the trunk.

that's gonna look good, though. props on the nice work & best of luck.

I second that Nice work bro, and how thick is the mdf ? Im thinking of doing something similar but in the back seat instead of trunk.

Sealed enclosure according to specs 1.5 cu ft is minimal 6 cu ft maximum
ported minimum is 3 cu ft and max is 6.0

Just to clarify. you may be ok if you keep it sealed. The box looks pretty small but, you take a chance of damaging your sub in a smaller enslosure than spec.

Oh yea i checked out the kicker specification for a sealed box and they say: Built to fit Kicker specifications by a third-party enclosure specialist:
--Internal Box Volume: 1.88 cubic ft. and thats to get the most bass out of that sub.
--Box Dimensions: 19-1/2"W x 16-1/2"H x 13-1/2"D

Hope that helps buddy and it looks like your close to that so your all good but im sure you knew that already hehe

I'm guessing just by looking, that it's probably 2+ cubic feet. If memory serves, the L7 15 is recommended for sealed 1.5 to 6.0 cubic feet enclosures. Obviously, he'll be playing around with fill, and tuning. Either way, me likey! (and jelous that I don't have any money right now lol)

Looks good so far. I am doing the same thing except I used aluminum foil instead of duct tape. So far I have spent about $40 in materials so far

i know you said you checked to make sure you have enough space, but if your worried about it from the 30 some odd posts about it possibly being too small, just invert the sub and then you will deffinately have enough space since that is a huge magnet. also maybe next time you might want to think about making a sub ring so that the sub sits down more flush. i guess its more personal preference but in my opinion it looks better and more professional that way. nice work so far.
