Always check your wiring jobs.. Car caught fire!!!
Sunday, February 20, 2005 8:10 PM
Posted this in the P/M forum because I am goin to take pics when my camera batteries charge...

Story goes like this...

Finally got my ZEX management unit in Thursday so I could finish my nitrous set up.. I did some prewiring a few weeks back for my purge, bottle heater & in line pump. That same day I also ran my nitrous line under the carpet near by the wires and through the firewall with the wires.

After taking a trip to Earls fitting here in Indy to pick up a couple lines and fittings, I comenced to finishing the fuel and nitrous plumbing. After finishing the plumbing I turned over the key to get the fuel pressure up so I could check for leaks, no leaks found. I then decided to back the car out of the garage and let it run for a while with the second pump on so i could check for leaks under higher pressures.. No leaks....

As I was sitting in the car I hit the purge and the solenoid didn't click.... was kinda confused. I hit the bottle heater switch and I expieriance a high voltage loss... turned it on and off a few more times, same thing.

I pulled the car into the garage and started smelling smoke.. I knew it was electrical as soon as i smelt it. Smoke started coming out of my dash and my DS firewall in the engine bay.... I FREAKED OUT!!!!! I found the smoke in the engine bay and noticed it was the nitrous line sitting on the brake fluid harness. Like an idiot I grabbed the line and it burnt the crap outta me. I then threw on my welding gloves and grabed the line so I could unhook it and seperate it from the convolute tubing it was melting. When I grabbed the line it sparked on the firewall... I new I was in for it.... I had happened to buy a fire extinguisher that I mounted in the car where my false back seat is. I grabbed the extinguisher and smotherd the harness and then ran to the back to unhook the battery in the trunk. After all this I unhooked all nitrous lines and started inspection. The Main line is dicolored and in pretty much ruined and the brake res harness needs some work. I then started ripping up the carpet, this is were I found the probable source and the most carnage. I belive that one of the wires (bottle heater maybe) got jacked up and contacted the N2O line.... then heated the steel braid and burnt up more + wiring and my main power cable... Man it was ugly under there... Wiring for all types of very important aftermarket goodies was affected in some way.

I am under alot of stress to get the car finished before the end of march and only have a few days above freezing here and there to do the work. After thinking about a few thing I realized some obvious faults.
1. I should have taken the time to jack the car up and run the main nitrous line under the chasis.
2. The fuse for the bottle heater was on the opposite side of the switch. Which means that if there was a short, It would cut off power right before the heater and not all the 5ft of wiring from the battery to the switch then to the fuse... stupid.......
3. Expect the worst... I should have made sure that every wire was fused and that it was protected.

Thank the lord Jesus that I did not lose my car.... I don't know what I woulda done...

I am going to push everything back and redo everything the RIGHT way... This ordeal probably cost me up to $100, but It coulda been the whole car.

I will post pics of the carnage tomorrow......

yea and coming back after hearing an explosion and melted cav.... glad u caught it! I wired up a strobe light and didnt have it fused cuz i wanted to test it, i had it all wired but hooked up wrong like an ass and it caught fire and melted wire everywhere. Smoke was pouring out of my trunk. Glad i was there to rip the wire out with some pliers! lol

This is exactly the reason I'm pondering getting a tiny fire extinguisher and throwing it beside my spare tire....

I shorted 2 wires out in the old Z, grabbed them on instinct, and had wire insulation melted into my hands for 4 days or so , god that sucked!

Man glad it wasn't worse, sounds like one hell of a time. I myself have been working in temps right above freezing, I've done soo many projects this winter, more so than last summer.

Pics of the interior under the carpet...

Engine Bay... Excuse the fire retardant..lol

Nitrous line (aka 15ft. live wire)

The pics really do not show the amount of problems that will need repaired. Prob will be a 8 hour + fix.....

Heres the rebuilding supplies I picked up at work today.. Various sizes on convolute, heat shrink, inline fuses, tape, zip ties, nylon clamps, ETC.....

And this is why I live in sunny Arizona, so I can work year 'round without worrying about chill factor and hurrying so I don't freeze.

Next time, you should put a fuse right after the battery. That way, the fuse would have blown, instead of burning up.

Glad you caugh it before it got to bad. But what it could have been is a strand of wire got outside of the casing from the factory and touched the chassis. I bought a amp wiring kit and i looked at the power wire i duno why i did but i saw a lil bit of copper wire poking out of the side. i put some shrink tube and tape over it but after that i check all my wires prior to install
