Is changing the LED's in a 2000-2002 also like he cluster...a pain the ass? or are they okay?


Working on obtainting an M-Class license... ?? Hint: 2 wheels.

nope easy as pie, just pull the stock bulbs out and put whatr ever LEDs you can find to put in there. they are size 74 bulb

I guess I'm a little slower than you guys... The lights in my HVAC controls haven't worked in a while, and now that my instrument panel cluster lights won't work either I took my dash apart. I got the intrument panel apart and looked at the bulbs with the green sockets and they appear to be ok.. not clouded up, filament is intact, nothing "jingles"... So I don't know what the deal is with that, and any help would be awesome! Back to the HVAC, I got the electrical and vacuum connections apart but had a hell of a time with what if I remember correctly the Haynes manual called the AC something.. it was like a cable, 2nd "thing" from the left to detach. I can't figure out how to get this unhooked so I can take out the control unit itself. Any tricks to that? The manual said to use a screwdriver to pry apart a clip that holds it in, but it's dang cold in the garage and I'm nervous about breaking all the plastic pieces! Then after I do get that apart, is it just a matter of taking some screws out to get to these HVAC bulbs? What if those bulbs are ok? Do I just have some random mystery electrical problem if my instrument panel lights and the HVAC lights don't work? My idiot lights, turn signals (the red socket bulbs in the inst. cluster) all still work! Also, I checked the Inst panel lamps fuse and it is also good to go. Any help would be great!

Just to ensure you've eliminated the obvious, Have you checked the fuses for your instrument panel cluster?

First thing I did... I checked both fuses that were something INST and checked the HVAC control one too and another that said something about interior lamps, they were all fine.

I think it's probably in the wiring or the PCB.

yea my hvac lights went out like a month ago and i checked my fuses and got nothing... i have no idea wat mine is either..

mine are out as well...trying to fix them currently.

i had a problem with my cluster not lighting up along with my dash. turns out it was a bad interior fuse.

not to mention. you CANNOT just pull out the old bulbs and put in new ones on a 2000-2005. they are soldered in and need to be unsoldered using an unsoldering iron.. not to mention. im pretty sure you have to pull the needles off to get to them also.

I ALSO have a cluster bulb out, have a new LED and the cluster apart...yes needles off....just need to find my soldering iron!

If your lights on the cluster as well as the HVAC it could be that your illuminate control is not plugged in, if you pulled that dash apart you may have disconnected it and forgot to plug in back in. The wire is on the back of the black bezel behind the illiminate control.

Let me rephrase myself.


I had ONE LED out in my cluster.....and no lights whatsoever in my HVAC control panel.

The HVAC control panel is now fixed. both #74 bulbs were burnt out, which I overlooked at first glance. They just unplug and plug in.

I took apart my cluster and took the needles off (bad idea). I found a similar LED at radioshack and soldered that one into place of the bad one. The LED now works in my cluster, but none of my gauges do.

Guess I'm going to buy a new cluster. Can anyone confirm that the mileage is stored in the BCM and not in the Odometer on a 2001 Cavy?
