My shift knob has the button you lift to shift into reverse. Can I replace this with a better looking one? I'm not sure how to do it. Thanks!
some you can just remove the collor on the shifter and some you just put a new knob.
I have a 03 and I just took of the shift knob and slid the peice along with a spring of the shifter, and then put a shift boot and knob back on and it works just fine. you can still shift to reverse but without having to lift that peice up so I think its better without it.

Yeah, its just a safety feature to prevent you from "accidentally" shifting into reverse...
95-99 cavs dont have it, its not necessary.
Easy to remove, and IMO i wouldnt put it back on with the new shifter...
I have an '05 Base.
If I got to a different knob, like a cool "10" Billiards ball would I have to put it back on or could I just remove it.
AND
If I go to a short-throw would I have to put the ring assembly back on, or could I leave it off?
take out the boot. look down, at the right lower area there's a plastic tab that works with the lift to prevent accidental shifting into reverse.
Cut off that tab. Done.
