dash pad question
Thursday, May 29, 2008 1:20 PM
I have a question about my upper dash pad on my 04 sunfire. I am redoing my whole dash sanding and painting, can that rubberish cover come off the upper dash pad to paint it instead of trying to sand it? I took the cover off of the center console lid and its a nice smooth plastic under it, is the upper dash pad the same way?

I don't think its all smooth and flat underneath the vinyl. If you are looking to get it smooth for painting you'll have to fiberglass it. I have 2 spare dashpads so I'll strip 1 down later and take some pics of it without the vinyl.

even if you remove the padding, your dash is going to look like @!#$. that rubber padding has a thickness to it and if you remove it your gonna have holes all around your dash because its not going to fit right.

my suggestion would be to use a vynal dye, and dye it. I did mine and it looks great. The pad is easy to come off though, like az24ncav said 7mm socket driver on roughly a dozen screws and it pops right out.

the padding is about an 1/8-1/4" thick, so if you pull it off your going to have to build the dash back up to look right, not a quick and easy process.

Is this the process that you see when someone has a real smooth and shiny dash pad instead of the contoured and crackled dash. I have vinyl dyed my dash on a previous J and will be getting another one soon. Just looking for the future.
