Power Window Question
Thursday, October 30, 2008 10:57 AM
I don't think I saw a h-w to on here. (If there is one can you point me in the right direction to finding it?)

Ok, well my back window in my Sedan won't go up. I'm pretty sure it's the motor. Can anyone explain to me how I can get to the motor to replace it myself? Disassembling everything and what not?

Thank you.

well talin the door panel off is pretty easy the screws around the edges of the panel you take out, there are two bigger ones under the door handle, then it snaps off. the motor is riveted in you will see it behind the metal lining, you will have to ethier install new rivets after drilling those out or use srcrews or bolts to secure the new motor in place. that should be all you need to know if you know anything about these acrs. if you need more just post again.-matt

While Matt gave you the basics, this is not an easy job and there are some decisions you need to make. While the motors are the same for all four windows, the regulators are not. And, the motors are riveted to the regulators which are in turn riveted to the doors, as Matt said. My recommendation is to find another regulator (with good motor attached) so you don't have to deal with removing the motor from the regulator. This is because there's a strong clock spring on the regulator that assists in raising the window glass. If you remove the motor from the regulator, you have to secure the regulator arm to the channel or you risk injury when the spring lets go. This is done (one way, at least) by drilling a 1/4" bolt hole through the arm and channel and bolting them together before removing the motor. Honestly, if you can find a complete regulator, you avoid a boatload of additional complexity. Regulators for the sedans and coupes are readily available (new) on eBay very reasonably, but be warned that quality varies as they're usually all aftermarket versions from Asia. New OEM ones are available from discount suppliers, but they're $$$ instead of $$ for the aftermarkets. Used ones can be had cheap at wrecking yards and doing the removal yourself will give you insight that will help when installing it on your own car. And of course, a manual is a great investment. I bought a set of factory manuals off eBay for $10 and they've payed me back tenfold. Good luck. - Mark

The worst part of a window repair is removing the rivets holding the regulator to the door (in comparison, the ones securing the motor to the regulator are a piece of cake). The door rivets are an SOB to drill out and remove, even with the correct tools. Once you do get them out, when you reinstall use bolts!
