guages

I know its been asked and I have searched but no two topics really have the same answer so I am going to ask again.

I have 3 gauges that need installing well wiring rather.

Auto-meter Phantom II electric boost and oil pressure gauges and an innovate xd-16 gauge with the lc-1 wideband controller.
With the wideband both the gauge and the lc-1 will need power then with the other two gauges they need 12v power and connected into a dimming light source. I plan on atleast getting the boost gauge wired up tomorrow now I have seen many different answers on where to get a power source and where to get a dimming source for power I have heard pink wire on steering or tap a fuse. column for dimming I have heard wire on dimmer and also some say wire coming out of the cluster. Now looking at my fuse panel today it appears that my xm is hardwired into the wiper fuse already. (XM was a Christmas gift and my parents had it installed for me at bestbuy). So my real question since the WB really will need two things powered what is something that I can easily tap into to power 3gauges and a wideband controller and also what will be my best option for taping something to dim the two autometer gauges with the car lighting? I plan on taking off the top dash cover in the morning and getting started on this so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

The light for my Autometer gauge is tapped into the wire for the lights on the cluster.

Its the gray wire.

FYI when i did mine i found 2 gray wires next to each other. I just closed my eyes and picked one. My 1st guess of the 2 worked so i left it at that.

I had my gauge illumination tapped in right behind the dimmer switch. Can't remember which color wire it is, but it's easy to find with a test light.

well i got the boost guage wired up its working and i tapped into the brown/white wire on the dimmer switch it dims the guage but its not dimming the interior lights anymore =/ and its kinda swapped dim brightens and brighten dims. I had been having problems with my dimmer switch previously the dome light wouldnt cut on when you rolled the switch all the way upwards that has been going on since I had to get my cluster replaced back in 06 speedo crapped out on me. So im thinking there is a short in my dimmer switch and messing with it today made it worse?

oh yea the way i tapped it cut the brown wire stripped the two ends put both of those ends back in the same side of a butt connector and the white wire from the boost guage in the other end of the butt connector. since it IS dimming the guage it seems like the problem is in the switch itself not my connection right? Tomorrow ill recheck it and maybe try to get the WB in.

If its dimming the gauge and not the cluster, you probably have a connection problem.

When I installed my boost guage, I also used the gray wire(dimmer controled source). The one right next to the solid black (ground). If you need pictures, let me know. I'll pull the dash off for the shot.

like shadow said its prolly a connection problem so I will check it tomorrow but the two ends of the dimmer wire that I cut are in the same side of the butt connector that and the fact that now my dimmer works the opposite way from what it should is what throws me off. side note since this is an electric boost guage it needs a power source that doesnt lose power while you crank so I got one of those fuse taps that lets you plug two fuses into one slot and has the power lead for the power for the gauge its self (not the lighting thats what on the dimmer) Is that a good way to power it or is there something better to use to power the gauge since I still have oil pressure xd-16 and lc-1 to find a power source for.

actually CAS if you could help me find that wire that would be great. because i just figured out the dimmer works fine with out the lighting to the guage tapped into it.
