how hard is it to remove the center console? and is it nessecary to do when replacing shifter?

Yes you have to remove it to replace the shifter. There should be 4 bolts: 2 under the lid, 1 near the shifter(have to remove the window switches or the cover piece if you had manual window, im pretty sure) and 1 up in the cubby hole under the HVAC.

to remove the actual shifter? once the center console is off, look under the shifter and pop off the 2 shifter cables then its just 4 bolts (1 on each corner) that hold it down.
and then it just pulls right out?

yea, unclip the 2 shifter cables and then remove the 4 bolts and it comes out. wild weasel has a how to for a short throw shifter on his site and it shows how to remove it with pics.
