Headliner

How hard is it to remove and recover the headliner, and the sun visors. And what kind of material would i recover it with.
I have a 4 door 2000 cavalier.

remove the a and b pillar plastic moldings, they are right beside the windsheild.

sun visors drop out via 3 torx bit screws for each...

pop off the dome light lense and remove the dome light from the headliner itself...

and seeing as how its a sedan, you MAY have to remove the side pillar moldings as well, and to do this your going to need to take down the upper seat belt mount. most cav's ive worked on had a big torx bit bolt holding them on, i believe ive seen some where its just a regular 12 or 13mm bolt though. ive never taken the headliner out of a sedan before so thats why i said you MAY have to remove these.

when removing be very careful with the headliner, its a very flimsy piece and bends easily. so just take your time.

as for re-covering, you can use just about anything, just make sure you rip off the stock material and clean up the surface real well. make sure you use some EXTREMELY good glue/adhesive here though, i would even venture down to a local upholstery shop and ask what they would suggest to use.

i agree with all but removing the stock fabric. theres no reason to do so unless you like making more work for yourself, and wanna chance working with a rough surface which will make the final product look like poo

I removed the stock material and wish I didn't. It makes the headliner really flimsy. Fabric spray (Auto Zone, etc) worked well when I wanted to go from gray to black. As far as recovering, get some material that has a fabric kind of back cause it's lighter and flexible....cause I found some vinyl that looked great but was very heavy and stiff. I'm not sure on the spray adhesive...prolly some good trim adhesive or the 3M stuff.

Are you talking about the Dupli-Color vinyl/fabric coating? Did it turn out very crusty for you?

I'd really like to recover mine with foux leather, I would put a padded backing on it and pleat it every foot or so for a stock look.

Listen F***ers. FASTERTHANAHONDA is a joke because I WORK FOR HONDA. I'll talk @!#$ about Fords to, that doesn't mean I can beat a 12 second mustang.

leave the stock material on as said. its thin enough that its not noticable when coverd. and material to use is more based on what you like. i prefer recovering it versus dying it. to me it gives a cleaner look if you cover it.

well, honestly ive never re-covered anything in my life. i just figured if the stock stuff ever comes loose and un-sticks then your going to be in for a re-do. plus i always do everything the hard way LOL.

with allot of pieces you would want to pull it off, but the headliner is pretty thin as it is so removing it isnt nessicary.

Yeah, that the stuff. Not at all, I was very pleased with the outcome. Though I felt things stuck to it a bit more and it left white marks when scratched....but it would rub away.

what if you got some say thin styrafoam cut a design outta it, glued it to the old head line and recovered it? Would this give it a raised logo look??

I reupholstered mine and it kept drooping in the sun. Then i tried dying it and didn't like it much. So, i just decided to go to a junkyard and buy a charcoal headliner from a cavy and i popped that in. Imo that looks the best.

go to a joannes frabric or hobby lobby type store and they sell foam. get something about an 1/8" or so, doesnt have to be super thick, but make sure its a harder foam. with styrofoam if you pushed on it after it was done you'd permanently mark it up. a hard foam would bounce back. i was talking to an upohlsterer and he said sometimes they'd even use abs plastic if they wanted a really sharp piece.

Or you could simply get one out of an older 3rd gen seeing as they came with charcoal headliners and visors.
