Well, last summer I recovered my dash pad with a different color leather but I never liked how it turned out. Has anyone tried stripping the stock material off first to get to bare plastic before recovering???

people mainly strip it for glassing the dash pad do to the fact if you glass over the stock padding, the dash will be too thick and not fit back in place. you could try removing the padding and wrapping it but you'll need multiple layers in order to get the thickness back so it fits properly.
what about it turned out "not how you like"?
i wouldnt reccommend stripping the stock material just to wrap it.

A lot of the imperfections I can hide, but still annoys me. Some are my fault because as much as I precleaned the surface glue would not stick ( used 3m super trim adhesive )Certain areas like the defrost vents were too thick and would not let the vent back in.
