i tried searching but couldn't find a for sure answer....
I have a 99 sunfire and I have a 2000+ console to put in. My car is a 5 speed and from what i understand the 2000+ consoles are the same for an auto and 5 speed. Is there anything i'm going to need to do to get the 2000 console to work with my shifter?
does anyone that has done this know for sure??
thanks
you should be able to just throw it in and it should work
cool
thats what i figured
just need to find the retaining clip for the shift boot now.....these things are impossible to find!
You should get the 00-05 console mounting bracket
k thanks
is the shift boot retaining clip the same on all 2000 - 2005 consoles? Or did it change at all? I found someone with a clip from a 2003 cav console. Also... the mounting bracket... where is that located? I can probably get the bracket from the same person
yes the clip will work all 00-05 consoles are the same. the brackets are what connects to the floor so the console can bolt to. it should be the front and middle metal peices. i think the fronts might be the same as the 95-99 but dont quote me on that
Correct me if I'm wrong, but i thought that the hole in the center console was slightly over sized on the automatic, the shift boot will still fit but not as tightly...holes slightly a different size?????
BTW spaz....i got a shift boot, i think i still got u on msn, or just pm me.
the hole into the auto console is smaller than the 5 speed one.
The shifter opening on the manual console is larger than the automatic one.
Also, the front mounting bracket (under the radio) cannot be changed (it's welded to something) so you will not have a place to bolt the front part of the console to. The mounting bracket that is under the power window switches / storage compartment can be switched though. You will need to unbolt the shifter assembly to remove this mounting bracket.
any idea how much smaller the auto opening is compared to the 5 speed? is it close enough in size that i could dremel the hole larger if need be? I *think* the console I have is from an auto however I'm not 100% positive as I'm missing the clip for the shift boot
It's not a huge difference in size. You could actually just dremel out a hole big enough to pop the front clip of the shift boot into, as oppose to dremeling the entire opening like the manual console would have.

nope. the 95-99 cavalier bracket is close to the 00+ console bracket. it'll bolt in but shift the front slightly towards the drivers side. the 95-99 sunfire is completely different. you can't even fit it under a 00+ console.

i put the 2000 console in today but i havent been able to get my hands on the 2000 front bracket so its not 100% secure ATM. Do I need to get the entire shifter assembly from a 2000? Or is the bracket for the front removable on its own??
I'm wondering if theres another way of securing the front of the console?? 3M adhesive tape on the underside? i haven't been able to find the bracket for the life of me
For the 2000+ consoles, the front bolt hole is part of the shifter assembly, on the automatics anyway. I have a '95-'99 shifter in my Sedan so there is nothing for the front bolt hole to line up with, but the bolt hole under the master window switch and the two in the bottom of the storage compartment hold the console in place just fine. In my opinion, as long as you have the other three bolt holes filled, I wouldn't even worry about the front one being filled. The console isn't going to go anywhere without it.
the bolt that goes under the power window switches didnt line up with the hole underneath though.... hmmmm
so i just double checked......
on my 99 sunfire console i took out... theres the 2 bolts in the bottom of the storage compartment which i have in no problem.... then the 99 console had a 3rd bolt up at the front in front of the ebrake (i had to take the dish out at the front of the console under the HVAC to get that one out.... i didn't have a bolt in the middle under the window switches.
i suppose i could rig something up to get a bolt into the front one
