Gauge Cluster Swap HELP!!!
Saturday, March 15, 2008 9:21 PM
I am looking to swap my cluster in my 99 cavalier with a cluster with a tach. I know that the 95-99 don't store the mileage and i suppose i can live without it, i will just let a person know that i changed it if i ever sell the car. I have a digital gauge cluster and i just so happend to come across a digital 98 Z24 cluster with a tach. I am very interested in buying it but i held off to learn more before i got it. Does anyone know if this will work properly, like fuel reading, temp, etc... so that i can decided to go further. Thanks

I am almost 100% positive that the 98 clusters with digital tach and the 99 are the exact same circuit board.
I don't remember which year they changed the fuel sender, but I think that was in 2000. I know for a fact that the rest of your gauges will work fine.
You might want to check with a dealer for the replacement fuel sender and see if they are the same or not. The difference is just in the impedance range. The older ones are 0-30 ohms, the newer is 0-90.

FYI, I believe you can swap the odometer from your cluster to the new one just like with the mechanical ones.

On the mechanical one, you just remove the back of the cluster, and *carefully* pull the circuit board off. The motors that operate the needles are pushed into terminals in the circuit board. Once you get those off, you will see where the odometer plugs into the circuit board with a small connector. You remove this, and the circuit board will come completely free of the cluster. There are then a few screws that hold the odometer to the front of the cluster. Remove those, and the odometer will come off. Put your old one in, and put the cluster back together the way you took it apart. You will need a smal torx bit to do this. I can't remember which size off the top of my head.

I am pretty sure that the 98-99 digital odometers are swappable in the same manner, but I haven't actually had one apart yet.

i dont know if you can swap the digital odometers. im also pretty sure that the 98-99 clusters are the same. i have a mechanical cluster so it was easy for me to swap the tumbler over. you can probably get gm to reprogram it for you. thats my only suggestion.

the 98 and 99 are the same you just have to reprogram the theft system for it no big deal. I also have to clusters for my sunfire and if i remember correctly to keep my same mileage i had to use my old cluster which both were the same just my odometer quit working so i tore them both apart and took the digital odometer out of the lower mileage one and put in my old cluster and it still showed the same mileage as before. so no you can't switch the odometer in the digital ones to keep your original mileage but gm can program it.
