Cavalier center console swap?
Saturday, March 01, 2008 9:59 AM
So i dont have power windows, sadly, but I am thinking about changing that.

I have the console without the window switches in it, and i wanted to swap it for one that does, to start out. Has anyone taken out/ put in a console before? And is it a fairly difficult job?

Later on I would prolly get power doors from a junkyard, and do the wiring, then get the car painted again.

Thanks

you can just swap the cover peice that holds the switches into your stock console as long as there from the same style console. if you wanna swap the whole thing its pretty straight forward. 4 10mm bolts hold the console in place and abour 5 or 6 13mm nuts hold the mounting brakets in place.

I would suggest finding a donor car at a yard, and getting everything. It's not terribly difficult, but a little time consuming.

You need:
Window regulator (the actual mechanism that holds the glass and moves up and down)
Wiring harness (it's going to be tied in with the power locks--I'd take the whole thing.)
Center console cover with switches.
Door panels (so you don't have the hole where the crank used to be)

You don't need to change the door, just the regulator, from a manual to a motorized. The wiring harness will be the biggest pain in the ass, because it runs up into the dash and fuse box, but if you get the whole thing, you can just swap yours out. You may want to actually double check your door harness if you have power locks, because on mine, I didn't have power windows or mirrors, but I had power locks. The harness already had the wires and clips for the windows and mirrors, so I just needed the components.

i also want the power window console right now cause theres a blowout on C/F accents, and theres one the goes over the switches
But could someone tell me where the bolts are located , for the console? lol

Just look at the console... there's 4, 2 where you lift up and there's a cubby, and 2 at the front I believe... check team forward motion, I'm sure they have pics... btw... if you can't figure out how to take the center console out, I'd advise against putting in power windows, not to sound like an ass or anything.... Just don't want to see you bite off more than you can chew.

There will always be someone faster than you, but thousands slower and dumber than you.

There are two under the trim piece, two under the carpet piece inside the storage compartment, and one at the very front under the little oval you have to pry up with a screwdriver.

Not sure if those motors will fit the manual regulators or not. But for $22.50, I'd give it a shot. It's much easier to swap the motor than the entire regulator. Even if you can't, and you end up having to go to a salvage yard and get the regulators, you will still have brand new motors to put on them instead of the old ones.

Then, pop out your "cup" in the middle of the console, fiberglass over it to make it flat, and mount the switches in that, or any other flat surface.
