Fiberglass OR Paint
Friday, January 25, 2008 10:21 AM
Ok first of all i searched for the post on how to paint your dash without fiberglassing and still have the same effect. I've even PM'd a couple people who i thought started the post. Anyways, I seen it not to long ago and the guy shows how he did it in the paint booth, spraying several coats of primer/sanding and so on..... Second if anyone knows which post i'm talking about then what would be pro's and con's of fiberglassing or just painting using this method. They both look really nice as a finished result.

If your still confused on what i'm talking about, i 'm talking about the soft dash cover

Thanks guys, Chris

Haha sorry Joey... yeah there's questions and a post reference. Just looking for that post and if you know what i'm talkin about then i would just like to know your take on the pro's an con's between painting it via those steps or glassing it. And if you like neither would maybe wrapping it just be the way??

Just open to suggestions from the professionals that have already been there done that.

My dash is already black from using dye but it's gettin old to me and want to start something different.

Chris

well, i would say the easiest way would be to wrap it in suede or vinyl. prolly take you 2 hours from taking it out to puting it back in.

fiberglassing will take a LONG time and alot of work. and if you have no/limited experience with glass work, I personally wouldnt suggest starting with a piece like the dash.

painting can work, but to do it right alos involves alot of work and technique.

Yeah i deff have experience painting the interior and you sir are by no means joking when you say it's takes TIME..... As for glassing, thats new to me. Wrapping might also be an idea to match the dash with the door inserts where the rest is all painted.

But the only issue i would have wrapping the dash is that i still have my vents exposed and... don't you think it'll look trashy with the mix of plastic and fabric in one piece.

For example your dash is nice and smooth havin elminated the vents and what not.

I might be getting off topic here alittle just kinda stuck between a few ideas i guess.

heres my take on the two. fibglassing the dash top is going to give you a much more solid structure that will take more abuse versus just laying on several heavy coats of primer and sanding that smooth. both will work, fiberglass i feel will just be more durable. if your not one to be heavy handed then that may be fine but most people tend to not be so gentle with their cars and need all the protection they can get.

and if you havnt really fiberglassed before then this isnt the project for you. large semi flat areas like this are going to show any flaws big time and are hard to get perfectly smooth.

how are you paintin it and what kind of paint are you using b/c i used fabric&vynil paint on mine to change it from tan to black and gave it a clear coat and have had no problems with it at all have dragged things across it and havent peeled or scratched the paint at all however i did it in the direct sunlight in aug so the paint could really cure to the vynil. but im with joey fiberglass will take forever b/c u have to lay down layers upon layers to get the thickness back up then sand prep and paint re- wrapping would be your best bet for diffrent colors and when done right can look like it came stock that way.

Yeah I understand where your coming from but i've already got alot of my interior done and want something different... i just can't seem to find the post nor can anyone else about the guy that painted his dash with automotive paint same way you would other pieces of your interior.

Except he sanded on the soft material while priming. In the end it turned out the same finish as if you glassed it...... i seen the post not to long ago and i believe it was an older one. It's just hard to explain my self when i don't have a ref thats all.

do you really have to fiberglass the dash around the headunit and stuff to get it that smooth and glossy?? or could you just use sand paper, primer, paint, and clear?

derric - The piece that you are talking about you don't need to fiberglass it in order to get the glossy finish you are asking about. Just follow the steps in the sticky how to paint your interior. The only time you'd want to fiberglass that piece is if you were modifying it. An example would be when you are putting gauges inplace of the vents and so on.

The most important part is the prep. Then comes how many coats and how you apply the coats and the drying time in between.

People tend to rush things and want them done like yesterday. You'll only get out of it, what you put into it.

Another thing i've found is using automotive paint out of a gun is ten times better then the good ol rattle can. Not that i'm saying there's anything wrong with a rattle can. It just depends on experience and the person doing the work thats all.

I'm by all means no expert at this but there is a number of people on here that can give you the fine details with knowledge they've aquired on past projects.

Anyways hope that helps answer your question......

no, it was this site because i remember the post, just can't think of who it was that had done it that way. i believe he just laid up several coats of high build primer, that stuff gets pretty thick, and then se just sanded the primer smooth and painted it.
