1998 Z24 Ashtray Removal

Guys, I am unhappy with the location of the 12V outlet right next to the steering column, so I am planning to pull the ashtray out and install a dual 12V outlet plug in place of the tray. Is there an easy way to get that out without ripping the dash apart? I'm trying to keep this as simple as possible. Any help or even pics would be great! You can email me at jordankeck@gmail.com.

Thanks!

I would recomend adding a 12v port in the tray below the HVAC and radio, tie it into the Cig circut. its not hard to tear down the dash Team Forward Motion has a great writeup on it. It's nothing to fret about, i can do mine in a less than 5 min, but ive also taken mine down 10-100000 times.

BTW, I know what you mean about the location of the port, it sucks, what was chevy thinking? On my 03's there is one on the center console which is nice, but us 03 and olders are SOL

another option would be to swap in a 95-99 sunfire console, as they have a spot on them too.

as for the metal ashtray....i am pretty sure it simply pulls out. i took mine out and put my knight rider lights' control box in there.

yep the metal box does just pull right out, it has a tin hole in the rear of it that you'll pry need to enlarge to get the wiring through.

i put my external bass control in there and had to hog out like a 2 inch section to get it to come through it and it was a BITCH. but u should have much trouble.

Thanks guys. I pulled the metal liner out and that allowed me to remove the sliding plastic tray. That will work out perfectly as I want the 12V outlets always accessible. Does anyone know if the wires for the light in the tray are always live??? I am at work now and do not have a multimeter to check the harness.

Thanks!

You don't need to remove the ashtray, what I did was bought a triple 12v outlet and used the two small screws that came with it to secure it to the ashtray,it has two "arms" that swing out with holes in each,I had used double sided sticky tape to hold it in the beginning which is an option also.Obviously you still need to use the 12v on the dash unless your planning on trying to hardwire something.

My does not have any ash trays either or the second plug in on the center console. Where exactly are these ash trays?

my 97z had an ashtray under the radio (on the bottom part of the dash that is a PITA to take out) and on the back side of the console. it swings around and opens and then closes flush. the one under the dash is barely noticeable at all.
