Back window tinting
Wednesday, May 16, 2007 3:28 PM

I had my windows tinted on my cavy a long time ago, but there was a problem with the back window. The guy who tinted it could not tint in between the dots that fade down the back. I have seen pictures where it was all black and I was wondering how they got it like that.

In most cases tint will not stick to the "dot matrix". As soon as my rear window gets re-tinted I will be installing a strip of black vinyl on the inside of the window to cover the dots. You could also put the vinyl on the outside of the window to cover the dots.

sometimes they use special glue, to hold to the dot-matrix, other just paint, or cover it up with black

I Just had my windows tinted, and they used a sheet of black vinyl on the OUTSIDE of the window vice over the dots. You cant see the strip from the outside unless you look real close, and from the inside it looks like its tinted.

I must have got a good tinter...tinted over the dot matrix and 4 years later still looks great!

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

yeah me to. my 97z is absolutly perfect here 5 years later. my 98Z is pry 95% perfect, there's one area that's 'bubbling' in the dot matrix section, but its pretty small. enough to make me hate it though

what exactly can we do to get this stuff off the top of the back window? ive tried using a very sharp razor blade and it doesnt do jack, even tried sandpaper and it did nothing.

hmm well there goes my theory to it, i was gonna sandpaper it but i guess that doesnt work, what exactly does the dot matrix thing do for the window anyway?

The tint shop that installed mine on the back window put a black vinyl banner on the inside of mine. Has been sticking for 4 years now w/ no problem. I wouldn't bother sanding down your dot matrix, too high a risk of scratching your glass.

I have mine tinted 4 months ago. What to do with this dot matrix is to press around every dot with some soft plastic tool with round edges to avoid scratching the tint. And get the tint heated a little before that. Sounds a lot of work but it is worth to try. I did mine in this manner and its good now. In any case you can try vinyl afterwards if not satisfied with the result.

I had three different people fail to get tint to stick to my dot matrix (myself included) -- so I spraypainted that area from the inside. It's held up perfectly, and looks even better than the pictures suggest.
