Cuttin up the dash... check it out
Sunday, October 14, 2007 8:14 AM
whats goin on guys, well i decided that i was going to take the dash out of the parts car and start chopping. i have thus far, totally rebuilt the hvac/headunit area, and what i am trying to decide is, to fit a set of component speakers in the dash, should i move the bezel to the center? i know is has been done before, but i definitely have a few ideas to change it up a bit. here are some pictures of what i got so far.

well thats what i got, tell me what you think! i will update this post out, i will keep it updated!

the interior will be black/tan, the dash itself will be a flat or satin black

symetry when dealing with audio helps out allot your best setup to get the best sound would be with a symetrical dash.

unless its just the pics, that sure looks hella crooked

but i am interested in where you go with this

if you are talking about around the head unit and such, it looks crooked in the pictures because they are angled twards the driver. but the bezel needs ALOT of work. the bottom drivers corner twisted a bit on me, so i gotta cut that and re glass it. well lets start off with todays progress.

i have not gotten much of a reply here, and couldn't make up my mind on what to do, so i did what any person would do. i busted out the dremel and started cutting some @!#$ up!

well to start off, here is the bezel around the gauges, i plan to shorten this(depth wise) about an inch to allow less total depth to the gauge cluster/bezel combined.

well to get right down to it, after about 3 or 4 hours me and dave decided that this is how we are gonna lay the dash out roughly

as you can see, like i said, i moved the cluster to the center, angled it towards the driver, it all still clears the rear defroster.

now everything is just kind of "tacked" in there right now, with some hot glue, this way we can lay everything out and make sure its how we want it. the cluster is held in by the stock mounting points which i moved, and everything should unbolt and come out once everything is finished

on with the rest of the pictures

and finally.... a random picture from dinner....

well to explain what we decided today, i am pretty sure that the gauges will be molded into the dash pad, and the gauge bezel will acctually stop just above the vents, and bolt on and remove indipendently to simplify audio modifications. i am debating on loosing the tripple gauge piller and mounting them in the dash pad below the cluster, above the bezel, and then we will be molding in the 6.5" component speakers. what do you guys think? i know there is a LONG way to go, but i am ready for it. and it is a spare dash, so its not like the car is torn down till its ready to go. so i have all the time in the world if i need it!

Looks good!

I saw a similar setup on another cav on the boards. I have an 00+ bezel if you need it shoot me a PM, You can have it for free i just would ask for shipping if you end up needing it.

Could you go Digital On the Gauges? That would give you more flexibility in placement!

think personally i'd ditch the center vents and get the gauge cluster allot lower then it is, think wheren your done its just going to look like its extremly high. think the placement is okay just gotta work on the height. im debating heavily on doing something similar with mine this winter, and if i do im going to try and get my gauges off the gauge pod and onto the dash itself

i can possibly move the vents, but i was going to try to keep the ac system working some what, due to the fact, my dad just fixed the ac for me after i did the motor/trans. but yes, i def think i am gonna loose the piller, and i will take you up on that bezel. get me an idea on how much the shipping is, or send it and i will hit you up paypal

hmmmm......looks familiar.

Check my old dash pictures on page 2 of cardomain, they were about the same idea you are working on now. The sound is awful putting the speakers in the dash. It will be very near side biased even with time delay. Also, as high as the speedometer is it will cause an issue making your top dash panel mate up with the widshield's vent (just too steep).

I agree that the cluster is gonna be a little too high. I'd figure a way to move it down and relocate the a/c ducts/vents.

i want the cluster to sit level side to side, but as you can see its kind of cocked twards the driver. i am planning on diggin into it tonight to see what all i can move, or adjust. which is why its only hot glued in there for now. i need to get a measurement of how high the current cluster sits relitive to the center vents, just to use as a reference. and as far as the defrost, there will be a custom grille made

I hate to bear more bad news but; what is bracing the base dash to hold it in position? I would be willing to bet my car that the base dash you are building off of is flexed to some degree sitting on that table and once everything is built it will not line up perfectly when installed.

to get everything were it was sitting, the dash was carried out, into the parts car, and placed into position. so the dash was sitting as it should. and when the first part of fiberglass goes on, it will be in the parts car, again, so that we dont have that issue. but thanks for looking out.

well i have been dicking around in photoshop, and well.... i need to get some pictures of the dash back in the car, but the cluster looks a hell of alot higher out of the car, than it did in the car. but in any case, here is a 30 sec photochop of what i am looking at doing. i am not needing the vents to move to bring the cluster down some, just some more chopping on the dash. as shown in box 1, there is that peice that the bezel used to bolt too. well its just kind of chilling since i moved the cluster mounting points. so i need to remove that, and add some support to the rest of the dash, the 3 orange circles are where i was planning on putting the gauges coming from the pillar pod. and then the 6.5" components, on either end of the dash. heres what i got

where did everyone go???? in any case, i sat out there and stared at the dash for about an hour, unfortinitly, that doesnt get it any futher than when i started. but i will be throwing it in the car tommarow and deciding which direction we are going with everything. and of course some more photos of it in the car.
