Underhood painting
Wednesday, August 01, 2007 9:00 AM
I'm not sure if this should be in the interior or exterior section, but under the hood is on the inside so here I am.

I'm planning on painting the coil housing cover on my 2.4 and my LO manifold once it's prepped. I wan't the paint to match so I'll be using the same paint for both.

I'm wondeing if I should use high temp paint, and even if it turns out I really don't need to, if high temp paint tends to be less prone to chiping and cracking than the reagular stuff or not. Also, as anyone ever had issues with chrome colored spray paint, I'm thinking of painting the words 2.4 twin cam and the empossed ridges with high temp chrome colored spray paint, and painting the rest of the coil housing and the manifold red.

Thanks for reminding me that I got a couple cans of high temp low gloss black I gotta use under my hood

I would, just to be safe use high temp paint for any parts of the engine.

When I had a stock hood on my cavy I also used High temp paint, I cleaned it real good with degreaser, then dried it(obviously) then primed it, then painted the underside of the hood white.. It turned out great...

Also, the only experience Ive had with chrome spray paint, is that after you put clear on it, it looses its 'bling', it kinda turns gray.. That happend when I had to repaint my TTR upper engine mount, so now im rocking the grey with red bushing upper mount, thanks to that stupid clear coat over the chrome paint..

I think he meant painting items under the hood, not the underside of the hood

lol when i first read the subject i thought he meant the underside of the hood. none the less i agree that with the temp the engine bay can get to, i would use high temp paint.

Actually I'm planning on painting my engine so it looks just like the one in whitecavy's sig. BTW maybee I should have titled the thread painting the engine or something like that. I never though people would actually think I was talking about the hood, pretty funny.

are you painting the I.D.I Cover? Use high temp paint. It doesn't hurt to use the high temp paint on other parts in the engine bay either. Just be sure to prep it right and you'll be fine.

Do you even drive your car or trailer it to all the shows? Looks like too much into the paint to be driving it, but then whats the fun of having a car you can't drive. Hey did you win anything at Indy?

i used hi temp paint on all my engine parts, including the head the block...ect just be sure to use the hi temp clear over it, as far as the chrome paint..... i wouldn't waist your time with it if u really want it to be chrome, like WHITECAVY said it fads out and just looks grey, i tried that along time ago when i thought chrome was cool lol........ yea not a good turn out..... my suggestion would be to go ahead and paint it red then either tape off what u want to keep sliver under that or just use a flat sander over the top before clearing it, because the letters and cooling fins are raised so it should be easy if you take your time.... thats my 2 cents

he's won/placed in all that i know of (except ITB). couple more shows comin up this month as well. it's not daily driven but he does drive it to work sometimes as well as to the shows. i'm sure it will be trailered once his HHR gets a hitch.

hhr would never pull it lol

we put maybe 2500 miles on it a year, drive it to every show and cruisin and gets driven maybe once a week or so by me or the wife to work. now that we moved to indy we dont drive that much. my grand am that i drive every day to and from work and to jobsites and back only gets about 5000 miles a year on it. i do want to get a trailor and truck to go to some far away shows like nopi in atl. or a few shows up in canada that i'd like to attend. i dont mind driving it a hundred miles or so to a show but dont want to take it on longer trips. for one theres no storage in the car anymore so when we go to shows we basically have to take two cars

and yeah i lost at indy again apparently berretta's are now j'bodies because first and second place in the wild class were berettas' the yellow one was sweet with a corvette rear end. really clean he deserved to win but he should have won in the gm class and it should have been j-bodies in the j-body class. oh well. only show i havnt won this year.

Prep it well. Or else the first time you go to degrease it and rinse it will chip like a mother f&*ker.
