Gauges

This may be a repost, but I could not find it anywhere. My question is this, do you have to remove the entire dash to remove the gauge cluster. I want to either remove or replace the red film "thingy" for the dash lights. It looks like you have to remove the whole dash to get to it though. Any help is always appreciated.

Well, you have to remove the top dash pad. So in that aspect yes, but with the right tools it's easy and can be done in about 15 minutes. There's a pretty good right up about removing it, you might have to search around a little.

I literally have taken apart my dash to KILL a half hour.
It takes me about 4 minutes to undo the dashboard.

Above the gauge cluster it is attached by snaps, so don't be afraid to pull a little hard. but then again don't use excessive force.

I can't remember the last time I had any screws holding the top of the dash in. I think the first time I took it off I just snapped it in place and called it a day. There are only like 5-6 screws anyway (1 on each end, 2 in the glove box, one in the defrost vent--that's all I can think of at the moment), then you just pull it up hard like Wil said.

To get the face off, there are 2-3 screws you can see after you take off the top. I think there are 2 on the passenger side, and one by the drivers side door jamb. Then it will pull out with a little gentle force. Just double check all around before pulling. I may have forgotten one or two screws. It's been a while since my dash has been in my car. I gutted the interior over a year ago in preparation for paint, reupholstery, and rewiring.

the top dash pad is held in by screws. the only part that snaps into anything is above the cluster where it meets the radio bezel. i never put the bolts back in my radio bezel so i can just snap that out and undo the 1 bolt behind the fuse panel and i can lift up the upper dash enough that i can pull out the gauge

Wow, I thought I was one of the only psycho's that didn't put all the screws back in their top dash, guess not, only have the ones on each side of the dash and the two easy ones in the glove box now. For the amount of time I spend under there wiring in new gauges it just makes life so much easier. See what I mean...

And que the co-pilot commet.
