Well i've never looked at the interior forum on this site and goot some really good ideas! I'm trying to lighten up the car and was looking for some ideas. Anyways i stopped by my friend Kevins' upholstery shop and he had a 1957 Chevrolet bel air in that was getting custom door panels made. All of the factory plastic is gone and it is all fabric. the whole panel weighs only about 1 pound and looks awesome. There are also custom speaker enclosures! tell me what you guys think! IM going to pst pics friday!

I don't remember my stock ones being over a pound in the first place. but I guess if you need lighter go ahead.

did they even HAVE plastic available for commercial use back then?

the stock door panels dont weigh JACK. get it out of your head that you need 'light weight' door panels.

if your that concerned about weight, ditch your entire heating/ac assembly's. thats good for at least 120lbs. def. something your actually going to notice.

unless your building something to run 10's or lower, why waste your time.

IM building a time attack car, but rules call for upholstered door panels. Why do people give such a hard time when they are doing something different? Im going for an oldschool look not a ricer look. Having worked the upholstery shop with my friend, i do know that panels can get prettty heavy. Thats why im doing something different, nobody made it big without doing something new!

03-05 base model door panels are lighter than 95-02 door panels.
Well brothers 04 base was lighter than my 99z & our 96 friends base four door. Not sure if all are lighter, but base 03-05 are light.

just for the fact that at most youlle probalby save maybe 2 lbs a panel. just doesnt seem really worth it if money wise and work wise for something you will never notice the diffrence on.

Well I'm a firm believe that everything adds up. So if you save 2 pounds on each door, and find other places to save 2 pounds, before you know if you have saved more than you thought, plus the heavier things like carpet, AC parts etc....

Well, since you don't mention what kind of car you have, non-upholstered panels could be a matter of 1 piece of carpet and some tweed ripped off...

--or-- you can remove them altogether

i agree, but if your gutting your entrire enterior so you can run a 15.5 instead of a 15.6 to me rolling around in a gutted, loud, uncomfortable care just wouldnt be worth it. now if its a drag only car that your running 11's then go for it.

1) you're not doing anything new
2) define "ricer". is it driving a 16 second econo box as a race car?
