A possible solution for cracked dashes
Tuesday, June 19, 2007 12:52 PM
I work for Coverlay Mfg Inc. We manufacture replacement dash covers and door panels for trucks and suv's. We have recently purchased a 2001 Cavalier dash from a local wrecking yard and are in the process of making a dash cover for the Cavalier. The dash cover will cover the 3-4 inch strip that is next to the windshield. My problem is that I cant figure out the year ranges on that piece. The dash itself may have changed but I need to know if that strip remained the same and the year ranges for it. We have received alot of calls on the 01 Cavalier and would really like to hear from you guys on your thoughts on this and if you would be interested in our product. You can go to www.coverlaymfg.com and look at other applications to get an idea of our products. Any questions please reply here or call me at 1(800) 633-7090. Thank You

I'm pretty sure it's 1995-2005 Cavaliers, but it would be better if someone else answered up.

Thank you for the replies and the info. The dash should be here in a few days. We will start working on the overlay as soon as we get it. The overlays are made of a high heat resistant ABS plastic and will fit over the original dash. There will be no need to remove the dash at all. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty and every dash is made from the original dash covers so once applied you will not be able to tell there is a dash cover on it. Keep the replies coming any info you guys have will be very helpful. I will keep you updated on the progress of the dash cover.

Well I went to 4 yards today......200 miles of driving. Just to find one Cav with a *less cracked dash than the one i have. I ended up taking the dash bezel (which i also have a cracked one of) for 20. I could have had both for 20, but pulling it wouldn't of been worth it for a cracked one.

I would love a cover.....maybe a modified Sunfire piece? Idk....I just want a easy and cheap fix.....( lol easy and cheap ya right)

is it going to require removal of the dash assembly? are they going to come painted? can you get them in CF?

just some of the questions I thought of.

Might as well do the whole dash in CF.

What colors will be offered? I would be EXTREMELY interested in one that is a spot-on match for the factory graphite. Hell, I'd be willing to let you borrow my fuse panel cover to color match it.

As an addition to the above, will the texture be close to stock as well? Thanks.

Oh, btw, the Pontiac Sunfires while also a J-Body, have a different dash setup, the trim piece on those cars is seperate. Its just the Cavaliers that its an integral part of the whole thing (stupid GM design).

Thanks for all the replies. To answer some of the questions I'll try to start at the top. As far as price you will have to hold on for that for just a bit for that. I don't know just yet but as soon as i find out I will post here first. The dash cover will not require the removal of the existing dash. The dash cover will simply go over top of the original dash piece. The dash cover is around 1/16 of an inch, is extremely durable and once applied you will not be able to tell there is a coverlay on it. As far as paint, we offer 10 different generic colors to choose from. We just cant garuntee an exact match to the interior. We don't offer anything in carbon fiber or graphite at this time. There are several alternatives in paint that is available to help match the interior. You can use SEMS which is a vinyl dye spray or you can use Krylon Fusion plastic spray paint. There is a leather look texture that we use to help match the vehicles original texture.
We will be making this product, I have been pushing for this for the last 2 months and I finally got approval to order the dash so that we could make the mold for the dash cover. Just to let you know we are not a fly by night company, we have been in business for over 25 years and we take allot of pride in the fit and design of all of our products. I will keep everyone updated with the progress of the dash cover. If you have any other questions please post here or call us at 1(800) 633-7090. Thanks for all the replies.

I'm also interested. My top piece had 2 cracks on each side of the center vent and one of them was a V crack and that piece recently just broke off after some bumps. So now I have a big gaping triangle hole in my top piece.

I think that the price will be very reasonable. The dash will be picked up today and should be here tommorrow or Friday. The mold process will take some time because we want to get the fit perfect. Usual time line for a full dash is around 2 - 3 months. This dash should only take a few weeks. The only thing that is going to delay this is that we are making new molds for some of our Mercedes dashes. He is finishinig up on the last one right now. I am going to try to get the Cavalier dash in there as soon as possible. Like I said I will keep you all updated.

Just an idea Mr. Yedica, would it be possible to put some color swatches up on your website that could give customers an idea what the colors really look like? Most of the colors I have seen there are the brown or black. A page with all the colors in one place would really help with comparisons between the different colors ie marron/red, dark grey/light grey, and so on.

The main reason we don't have any colors posted on the website is because not everyone has the same settings on there monitors. The colors on my monitor may look different than the colors on somebody elses monitor. If you or anyone would like a color swatch sent to them I would be happy to do so. Just call me at 1(800) 633-7090 and give me your address and I will be happy to send you one. We just ran into so many color issues in the past because their RGB settings were off and the color they received didn't match what they saw on their monitors. So if anyone needs a swatch just let me know.

Awesome! Years ago I used a Coverlay dashcap product for my old Datsun 280ZX, so I can say they use a very durable ABS plastic. It was the perfect solution for the dash which cracked in 3 places. It was a much better solution than a dashmat. Thanks for the heads up Chris!
