problem with a/f gauge.....
Friday, October 20, 2006 1:45 AM
ok, well i installed an air fuel ratio gauge tonight, and i spliced into the purple wire after the clip that is mounted by the idi cover(2.4) the problem i am having is that the gauge is reading straight lean, and i know this is impossible, not to mention i know that a freinds of mine is is suposed to "pulse" or whatever, so i know i did somthing wrong, but i donno what... any suggestions?

Hmmm...on the Eco I spliced mine right after the clip from the 02 sensor...maybe you spliced too far away and it's not reading the volts?

Not sure on the 2.4 as I've never worked on one but at the IDI seems too high to actually get a signal?

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

oh @!#$, i was looking at the wrong clip i guess....

hmmm... well i have been digging into this, i would really like to get this working today, i dont understand how it could be "to far" to get a signal, for the reason that if it doesnt get signal there, then what would be the point of having an o2 sensor if the computer wont get signal???????? can anyone help me?!?!?!?!?

You probably have it hooked to the wrong purple wire... There are 2 purple wires in that big clip at the IDI cover... DON'T USE THOSE.

Your looking for the single purple wire that goes to the O2 sensor in the Exhaust Manifold. Tap into that one right before the clip that the O2 sensor plugs into.

well i crawled under the car, found the o2 sensor, and i beleive that the wires run to (best i can figure) run to a connector with a purple wire and a white/tan wire. i tried tapping this one and nothing, i was told to try to tap the tan one, and i didnt get anything there, we went to get some food, and came back, and now my check engine light is on, what am i doing wrong!!!!! do i possibly have a bad gauge?

ok guys well here is an update, i have been dicking with this all night, i am getting ready to crawl under the car and triple check to make sure i have the right wires, with a seocond person this time, i checked another a/f gauge, same thing. i got a check engine light, advanced said it was for "lean" conditions, i think it was when we were messign with the connetions tho. any suggestions? the gauge is sitting all the way at lean, and doesnt "scroll" like i am told it should

well i just triple checked everything, and so far i am very confused here..... i have the right wires, comming out of the o2 sensor, they are a white and a black wire that run to the clip, which then changes to the white and purple wires. i tapped into the purple wire, and it just sitts at lean. i tapped into the white one, i effed up the idle, and threw a code again, but i did get some signal change there but it was sitting way lean. all i have is an intake, tb and catback, whats the deal? its not throwing an 02 code, so i am assuming its fine.... whats the deal? i am lost....

Are you using the O2 after the cat??? DON'T

You should be using the O2 sensor (IT'S ONLY 1 WIRE NOT 2) in the EXHAUST MANIFOLD. It's right between the engine and firewall. You should be able to see it from the top drivers side of the car.

If your using plastic wire taps you probably cut through enough of the wire that you'll have to go back and cut and solder the wires to get good voltage to the sensor.

i am using hte o2 sensor that is on the exhaust manifold. there are 2 wires on this o2 sensor. everything will be soldered when i am done. as of right now, they are twisted and taped. completely wrong i know, but its saving me alot of soldering till i figure all this out

I just realized you have an '01, sorry. There should be a TAN and PURPLE wire before the clip that the O2 sensor clips into. It's still the PURPLE wire that gives you the signal.

i donno whats wrong then, i tried tapping into this wire, and nothing. could my o2 sensor possibly be going bad? i was told to try tapping in closer to the sensor, but how would that matter? from my understanding of how all this works, anywere in the line should have the same signal strength for hte most part right?

Just tap into the purple wire as close to the clip as you can.
I don't know what else it could be...

well thanks to school and work i dont have time to @!#$ with it for a few days, maybe sat afternoon, i will solder everything up and shee what the deal is. maybe it will work, maybe not. we will see

well i got the connections soldered up, and nothing, same ole same ole.... i donno whats up. i am half tempted to say @!#$ it, return the gauge, and just put the money elsewere, maybe a wide band

Maybe the a/f gauge is right and you are running lean. You did say you got a CEL and ran the code and it ran a lean mixture code. Think this could be it? lol

na, whenever the guage is disconnected/not drawing a signal, the car runs fine, no codes. from doing some research, the gauge is just drawing to much current, so i will just be going with a wide band, i wil need one in the near future anyway, just wasnt wanting to spend the money right away, i got this gauge for $25.... anywho, next pay check i will have me a shiny new aem wideband
