Rear bench conversion to buckets
Tuesday, June 20, 2006 10:24 PM
I am wondering does anyone know how to do this. I am wanting to do this to my '05. I have been thinking of this for quiet some time now, this is what I want to do without a doubt about it. The only thing, I do not know what all I will be needing to do this besides the bucket seats. In between the seats I would want that empty because I have an idea for that space and then put a center console in the back. I plan on making my own sub box, the center I am going to put plexi there etched with something and have lights inside there to light up the etching into the cabin of the car. The center console for the rear of the car will be just a basic console with drink holder only. How do I go about the conversion to rear buckets?

Yes, I just used the search button, should have thought about that in the first place. Now to get ahold of Raptor.

Yes, I know that one. I am wondering about the brackets that he made for the rear buckets though. I have sent him an email now to see if he responds. I want to try to find some shorter back seats though, so that they are not sticking up over the rear deck.

i would think removing the head rests and reupholstering them so theres no holes would work

I am going to be replacing my front seats anyhow, and I want all the seats to match.

This is doms03cavy's car. He is not on here enough to see this post. He is a friend on mine.

We made mounting brackets out of strips of steel. No seat risers. We did have to drop the fuel tank in order to mount the seats

What size of steel did you use for the brackets? I am thinking that 2 inch angle iron or even 2 inch square iron to do the mounts. For the seats I am going to be purchasing 2 sets of racing seats for the install, that way all of the seats match, not to mention I want them all to match the color scheme that I am going to be using.

We used strips like 1/8" thick and 2 inches wide. The rear brackets bend upward and almost go to the trun area.
The front brackets bend downward toward the floorboard.

Has anyone split up the rear seat into a 60/40 like the second gens had (at least my '90Z24 did)?

It's hard to cart things around (like go snowboarding or something for example) and have more then 2 people if I have to put the whole seat down.

How about this one Kl Vna, when I am done with my conversion, I will sell you my entire stock rear bench from my car.

If I was in San Diego, I would.

03+ had a split-rear bench

Ian Brown Music mine is an 05 and has the 60 / 40. Need to read the post. Kl Vna, after I do the conversion if your still interested in the rear bench I will not sell it to, but I will give it to you, as long as you pay for the shipping. I will give you the entire thing, the bench, the seat backs, locking bracket for the bench and both lock brackets for the seat backs along with the straps for the truck to release them. The entire system is yours for merely shipping costs, that is if your still interested after I do the conversion. Will be around spring of next year though.

I read the post. You didn't say anywhere that you had a 60/40 bench you were selling. I was simply stating that if he wanted a split-rear bench he could look for a 03+ and get one out of there

Well first of all you did not read the thread. Kl Vna asked if anyone has split up the rear seat to a 60 / 40, and I told him that I have one that is stock that is in my 05. Just for your clearification. Next time do not tell me what I wrote, because if you had done your research you would have known that I have that 60 / 40 split (and yes it is stock). So that is where I am coming from by saying you need to read the post. Not trying to bag on ya at all.

Hey, I got your email but hadn't had time to respond.

As for my seats, I went to Home Depot and picked up two rather long pieces of "L"-shaped steel. I ended up cutting those into eight total pieces. Four were bolted to the floor (two for each seat) using the highest grade nuts/bolts I could find at Home Depot, and then the other four were mounted to the bottom of the chairs, which were then mounted to the bases I created.

The bracket, when finished, looked like this:

------seat-----
┌ ┐
└ ┘

Nowhere in that conversation does it say that you had a split-rear bench seat. He said that he wanted to know if anyone's done it before, and you said you would sell him your rear seat. Hell, I thought you were selling it to him so that he could hack it apart instead of wasting his original one.

No worries. I was just offering up mine so that he did not have to do all that hacking to it and then pay to have it reupolstered.

Hm, that diagram appeared fine on the computer at work. I'll see if I can get pictures today.

I'm thinking about doing this too. In my mind I imagine forming the straps and mounting them to the seats before bolting them to the floor. Am i correct on that?

In2johnny, that is exactly what I am thinking as well. But we will just have to wait until we see what Raptor did. It sounds like it will be easy enough though. 2 long straps of angle iron, cut into 8 pieces, drop gas tank, drill holes in the angle iron for the floor, then drill more holes in the angle iron to bolt the pieces together to form a bracket, and then drill some more holes in the top of that bracket to mount the seats onto the bracket. Then from there I am only guessing that you would then mount the seat to the bracket, use some JB weld or something to make the nut stay in place on the braket to mount the bracket to the floor board under the car. That is what I am guessing that would have to happen. Now to find some seats that goes with my coloring scheme, black adn silver, may hit up A+, see what Jason has.

Almost forgot the most important thing, thanks Raptor for the info. Can not wait to see the pics as to how to do this.
