I have seen a lot of cars on here with aftermarket steering wheels and was just curious how many are trailer queens, and how many are actually someones daily driver. If they are daily drivers, any idea what insurance companies think of this mod? I want to do this, but am a little worried about the insurance thing.

Some insurance companies may not be to kind to that idea as you are removing a safety device...
what they don't know won't hurt them...
but it may hurt you...most you lose air bags..and if your an idiot, you may forget to do your horn...
but it sure does look nice
Call your campany and see waht they say, cause i know mine dosen't look kindly of removine saftey equiptment at all, and if I did it without telling them, if anything were to happy my polocy woudl be void because of it

I've always wondered about taking a wheel from an STI or EVO or something like that that has a sweet wheel and still has an airbag, and adapting it to the Cavalier. Anyone have thoughts on that one???
I have aftermarket wheel, hell i've removed both airbags for certain reasons.. its my daily.. drive it everyday. I guess its kinda just my preference.. i drive mainly all city.. speeds not in excess of 45mph(35-40mph legally) and in my old red 00 cav i hit a tree head on after loosing control in bad weather condition.. it was discovered i was sliding at around 35-40mph.. hit the tree and after going up the curb hitting the tree and the car turning 180 seeming to be in mid-air becuase no marks proved the car turning around.. after i hit the tree from impact.. the airbag only kissed my nose.. just by how my seat wad tilted slightly back.. im not a small guy i will admit, 6' 265lbs.. so im sure that does play a factor in it but after that i only saw the airbags hurting me more then helping.. they actually are what caused my car to be totaled.. So in this car i pulled them both out.. mainly because the @!#$ previous owner in trying to do sumthing in teh steering column cut the wires for the driverside airbag(right behind the clock spring) this disabled them from working and in my search finding why my light was on this is what i found out.. and instead of trying to fix it i just pulled them out.. i would rather pull them out instead of them malfunctioning and them deploy unexpectedly.. Now like i said it was all person preference.. im not going to suggest it but i just give my opinion on it.. But i didnt get rid of them.. if anything does happen i do have them if needed..they are hanging on my wall in my storage room.. if i decide to sell the car theyd be included and new owner would be told of the problem.. Here we dont have inspections, they dont even give tickets for exhaust or tint around here..so it mainly all on ur preference and location..
Go ahead and stick an aftermarket wheel in there. I think aftermarket wheels feel so much better than the stock steering wheel. If yer' worried about the insurance just dont tell them. They wont ever know. If you wreck, chances are, if anyone else is involved in the wreck they wont look to see if you've got bags. If you end up not getting hurt too bad in the event of a wreck, just stick the stock wheel back in there before the insurance starts their work on the case. They wont even know an after-market wheel was in there. However, that's very hypothetical, so there's no reason to worry. I've got an after-market wheel about to go into my daily driver and I've got no concerns about it. Yer' best bet is to just stick an airbag simulator in there to get rid of the light and keep the passenger airbag in working condition.
Woooo bubbies.
it doesnt affect MY insurance at all..but i only have liability
..but ive been hit before and i got paid without a question asked..i guess maybe it woulda been a bigger deal if i hadgone thru the windshield though hehe
i drive mine every day and does not affect my insurance
well idk, i have usaa, when i had my jetta and got hit hard from my drivers side, sooo hard to the point the airbag should have deployed BUT i had a Sparco flash steering wheel with the quick release. When the inspector or quoter came down to look at the car he just overlooked it and he never even asked me bout it sooo yea i just let it go at that b/c the car was considered totaled, my 2 cents just get one and install it
the issue will come if there is a serious accident your seriously hurt, then the insurance company can come out and say the reason you were hurt so bad is because you removed the saftey devices, and theres a pretty good chance youlle be paying your own medical bills. its best to call and ask your insurance comp. directly. dont nessicarily give them your name just ask the question because these things are like asking about window tint. when i had illegal tint i was pulled over several times for speeding and nothing was ever said about it until you get that one ass cop that writes you up for it. this is the same thing, small accidents youlle probalby be fine, but if you ever get into a serious accident where an insurance company has to pull out allot of cash to pay for it, and they may start looking allot closer because insurance comp. dont like to hand out money.

Yeah, but they love to take the money don't they? The wheel should be here later this week, and i guess I'll have to make up my mind 100% then. What pi$$es me off the most is that we
did survive for nearly 100 years driving cars without airbags, and now all of a sudden we need them. If the OEM's would make better looking wheels with them, I wouldn't be in this predicament.

just do it but keep your old steering wheel
looks over safety.. isnt that what modding is all about?
i mean we put racing wheels in, go from plastic bumpers to fiberglass, put dark ass tint so no one can see in but inturn we can hardly see out, put chrome taillights with lil red circles for brakes making it hard for some to see brakes during the day, put big rims on with skinny tires so we can have something pop and go outta control, put light weight hoods on so it can fly into our windshield, put crazy systems so we cant hear anything going outside and soon to hear nothing at all later in life.. theres many more
just put the wheel in lol
Manta, you're right. WTF. If you can't say it, you can't do it. How long does it take to swap the wheels? I gotta plan some time to do it. I know the basic procedure, but was wondering about how long, are we talking lunch hour, or afternoon, or all day? Thanks.

it took me prolly hour maybe 2 the first time.. just take ur time and give urself a 4hr time period or something so ur not killin urself to rush it.. also ill mention now, take out the airbag clockspring.. there just a C clip infront of the plastic around the shaft, u just remove that and it slides off. then take off ur column panels and disconnect the airbag wire so it will come all the way out. btw.. have fun with the horn
i posted somewhere how i did it and it worked.. so if u have probs with the horn just search for a post created by Ruen in Interior about steering wheel horn and that should help you out.
The steering wheel is so easy to do but u just need to take ur time and check and make sure stuff works.. also make sure u have a wheel puller..
Thanks Manta. Any particular puller, or just get one from autozone? Think I'll buy it so that if I want to put the bag back in for warranty work or something I have it.
