New Dash Pad
Monday, June 05, 2006 7:52 PM
well Finally got it all put back together. first attempt at wrapping with vinyl. Only problem was I did a big no no last summer and tried painting the dash pad with Krylon Fusion Paint and putting clear on it a few times. Worked fine until The windows sat shut and the sun beat on the car for a few hours. Enough talk. On to the pics comments welcome.

Needs to be sanded better. Just got tired of my car being in pieces for the summer. Leaves me stuff to do this winter.

Did the light swapped the dash lights and HVAC lights to blue LED's

What did you use to glue it down? And did you take the stock vinyl off first?

I left the stock viynl on. I cleaned it but I still had old paint on it from when I attempted to paint it. I used 3m adhesive spray. And it stuck pretty good except in a few spots where the adhesive didn't stick. I picked up some contact cement and one other type of adhesive for where I was having a problem at. And redid just that section with the other so it would stay down. Some of the fabric got cut shorter than the other. and in other spots. I'm thinking if I can find it I'm gonna get another dash pad and redo it cause I have fabric left over yet. Just from me trying to take the viynl off my upper door panel I can only imagine what it will take to get the dash pad undone.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

no offense, but ur starting to get annoying - 4 posts now that ur dogging people for painting their interiors. Ive had mine painted, PLASTICS and all, for 3-4 years, no scratches, chips or anything. I'm surprised by the fact that you are an auto body tech but yet dont know the simple steps of painting plastic.

Plus, yes if u screw thm up painting u need to replace them, but we arnt stupid enough to go to the dealer and by them brand new. I get all my stuff from a junkyard as im sure many other people do.

me also, I live in Florida, I even have my windows down most of the time, i used dupli color High gloss, the sun nor the salt air when i park near the beach effects the paint at all.... (I I didn't even use a clear coat) 2 years, no sign of wear from the sun on my paint job.

The vinyl looks good and the seats are sweet. I would do the airbag cover with the vinyl too, it comes out easy with 8 screws in the back.

Ok guys, if you say you can get it to stick, thats fine. I guess im just a little opinionated because I have seen sooo many poorly painted ones. I have been lookin around on here and I have seen quite a few really neat and well thought out color schemes. But the whole time Im thinking that it wont stay on there. Your saying that you did yours 3-4 years ago and still looks good. Well good job. I guess yours isnt like the ones that I have seen locally.

And yes I have heard of plastic prep and adhesion promoter, I use them regularly on TPO bumpers. I havent had any one come in to work and request to have interior parts painted, I guess its not as popular around here.

So Im sorry for criticising so badly, Paint on..

Oh before I forget, thats a good Idea to drill holes in the dash to get the glass to stick.

That or even the krylon Fusion Paint. That is all I used on mine. Possibly ppl you have seen painted the viynl with a reg. paint.

I might give that a go. I need to probably redo the dash pad. First crack at it. When I did my trimming i trimed to much in some spots and it didn't stay where it was sopose to stay. only reason why i didn't really mess with the airbag cover was cause I wasn't sure if I wanted to try and viynl that or not. . If you have some pics of ppl that viynl'd that piece could ya point me at them so I could check them out and see how they look. Thanks for the comments!

Or its possible that the painted interiors you have seen were "halfarsed". I have seen a lot of painted interiors in my town that were poorly done and looked like crap. Most ppl dont take the time to prep plastic good before they start painting.

Might wanna check those rear brakes, when my handbrake stuck up that far the rear brakes were trashed. Just a suggestion.

I was happy when I heard my car ran 10s. Then I found out that was 0-60.

Do not order from this place. I ordered a yard of both the silver and blue, and they sent me about 3/4 of yard in the silver, and half a yard of the blue. And Charged me $55, instead of $30.
