Sparco wheel and HORN....
Wednesday, May 24, 2006 10:37 AM
OK this is like the 3rd thread ive posted, and still havent gotten a good responce.

Ive had this wheel installed in my car for over a year, but haven't been able to get the working since.

Here is what I've got.

MOMO hub.

The horn spring thing.

Back of the wheel. There are only two wires (the two red ones. they merge into one)

And the front.

I've tried about every combination for wiring and i cant figure it out.
A little help would be most appreciated!

We just installed a Momo hub and Wheel on a 99 z24 recently. We had to do a lot of custom crap for the horn. I did not do most of that part, will get the guy who did to post. The horn does work.

Well how i installed mine was where u have the airbag wire coming through, thats how i got the horn spring down.. I just removed the air bag clock spring and those 2 air bag wires come out with it.. but as long as u have that top circle lined up with the one coming frm the clock spring thats where the spring thing will go into.

Now on mine i wired it but i left the air bag wire tucked in between teh clock spring and hub causing it to honk when i turned so i took it back out i just need to redo it now..that was before i removed the clock spring obviously..

Ok Now take one wire from the spring thing and connect it to the one coming from the wheel. Now take the other wire and ground it to the hub.. I would maybe put a kinda connector on the end like teh circle or square ones just to insure a good connection then u can just electrical tape it to the hub where the wheel screws into the hub but on the back of it where the wheel wont sit on it. Now take the spring thing and put it through the hole where the stock one went in through the clockspring trying to push it in as far as possible by twisting it till it goes the furthest down and i guess its supposed to lock in afterwards if u try and twist it but on mine i couldnt get it to lock in so i just took some faithful old duct tape in a nice strip and taped that horn spring thing down put as many strips on that u need for it to stay down.. If u would like ryan i can draw u a diagram..

When i did the above method the horn worked great.. but like mentioned the air bag wire was catching the clock spring while turning and would cause it to honk so i had to redo it and i've just been too busy to fix it.

^^ I just did exactly that.

Either:

A) I dont have the hub lined up to where the connection should take place with the end of the spring

OR

B) Im not geting power

OR

C) Somethings shorted out...I just dont know what.

odds are thats what.. cuz im assuming from the air bag wire position and the fact that u prolly took the wheel off while it was straight for the most part.. now look on the ring of the hub.. see a arrow/triangle that points up and it says TOP if u look in my pics ull notice my wheel is slightly turned to the right by the arrow.

Now i went out and installed it for ya. i did what i said with taping the spring down but for sum reason i couldnt get the tape to stay down like the first time so this is what i did.. on the end of the spring there is a copper circle thing that the wires are soldered into.. on mine i just cut that and took out the white plastic and spring all together.. found a small wire connector for speakers and crimped in the wires like how that copper circle was. Then i just shoved it down the hole with no plastic or spring..(had to take some plyers and bend the wire connector a bit to make it more round to fit in the hole was all i had to do it to. once it was in all teh way i tested made sure the horn worked then used some tape to hold the wire down in there.. worked fine also.. didnt get pics tho

Sorry for the big pics.. trying to get in before the second storm comes in so i dont have time to resize.. but i think photobucket reiszed most of them automaticly.. if photobucket ownz me just go to http://s54.photobucket.com/albums/g115/manta_z/Racing%20Wheel%20Horn/ and the pics are there.. There not in straight order and they go backwards just find the image name and count up.. the lowest number being the first one

*If when u install ur wheel and the horn constantly honks take electrical tape and just put it all over the face of the hub where the wheel bolts down and just cut out the holes for ur screws.. but i think that was only my prob cuz the horn is a "Bride" wheel and the horn is seperate from the from the wheel and there was a metal clip which locked teh horn in which was touching the metal hub shorting out, but once bolted down all the way that metal clip was pushed back far enough not touching the hub so it dont honk constantly.. only honks when i push the button... like its supposed to

way to go ryan.. now i got less to do to keep me busy over the summer.. o well.. maybe i can get my interior halfway done this summer instead of leaving it gutted lol.

I found out what we did when installing this on another J. They cut the white plastic part in half (roughly). They then installed it behind the hub (so the hub pushes it down). Then hooked up the wires. The reason the white part was installed behind the hub was because it would not go through the hole on the hub.

well bitches....after a yea.............. IT WORKS!!!

I had two problems....(you guys are going to laugh)

1) the horn was turned incorrectly, so water got inside it, and sloshed around when I shook it. So I replaced the horn. -$5.

2) when i had the steering wheel off, and when i was looking through the hole where the spring mechnisim was suposed to go, all i saw was yellow plastic, so I had to go back to autozone and get a steering wheel puller. I removed the hub, and aligned it so the hole would align with the copper piece it is suposed to touch.

Simple as that.

The two wires coming off the steering wheel i hooked to the two wires coming off the spring.

The steering wheel backing grounded it.

DONE DEAL.

Thanks to everyone who helped me figure this @!#$ out!!! especially, Stephen (AKA Manta Z)

Really hate to bring back a thread this old but hey atleast I searched.

I'm trying to wire up my horn and I have the red spring wires like the one posted above only mine still has the black wires aswell. I'm sticking the spring into the only hole I see and when pushed in far enough it's making the horn go off, obviously completing the circuit but I don't understand how since the spring wires aren't hooked up to anything, it's just me pushing it in.

I think I understand the above diagram MantaZ made:
Stick the spring into the hole
Attach one red wire to the momo hub
Attach the other red wire to the horn button or in the original poster's case the 1 wire coming from the wheel. My horn button has 2 metal tabs tho, so I'm assuming I should get 2 clips and a little bit of wire and feed the 2 tabs into 1 wire like the OP's?

However, I still don't understand because if I do this won't the horn continue to blow?
