Dash replacement piece...
Tuesday, September 06, 2005 4:07 PM
This is a takeoff, from the GP post..... CONT....

OK.. in reply to 1Bad02Cav, i was thinking more along the lines of having a light gelcoated finish, which would be smoother and easier to work with, letsay to paint it, or do whatever...

I picked up all the stuff that i needed, and will be starting to take my dash apart tonite, and get something done today......

Not primered is probably the best option also, since i wont have to worry about having someone to lay it....

The cost...... i dunno yet.... granted i gotta sink some time and money into the mold, but besides that, to produce it, i dont see why it wouldn't be the same price, or even much cheeper.... once i make the mold, and make my first piece, thats when i will know how much material, and time it will take to make more pieces.
Heres where my resoning comes in. Since i'm making one for myself, i dont see why i wouldn't be able to make as many as i can, just so other j-body members can have it also.

Once i'll be ready for a GP, i wont be putting a limit on it either... and theres a good chance that there will be custom requests available....

I'll be keeping this updated.....

UPDATE.........

next on the 9:00 news, our cover story will include the folowing.........

Guys, guess what.......... i have fibeglass in my car curing at this time...... at first i was really skeptical about having a bucket of resin, and a bunch of fiberglass mat pieces inside, but i'm over it now, since it already is in...............
i just had to make sure i covered everything that i didn't want to get ruined.......
now phase two will iinclude removing the cured piece, strenghening it.... and clening up the corners...
phase three will include a ****load of sanding, and probably a thin coat of bondo, for that extra smoothness.......
phase 4........ gelcoat.......
phase 5.........mold release.....
phase 6 ........another coat of gelcoat followed by several layers of fiberglass....
phase 7.........voila........ the mold is complete.........
phase 8.........coat of mold release in new mold
phase 9.........gelcoat, and fibreglass.....
phase 10....... hope to god i did everything right and the piece fits...................

NEwayz........ sorry, kinda excited, couldn't keep the sarcasm inside....

PS

---------> JUNIOR <-------- you are the first
just to let you know though, i gotta make sure the piece will be perfect first, before i could give it to anyone......... I cant stand crappy workmanship.... i don't expect crappy stuff form anyone else, and i won't give it to anyone in return.... so like i said, it will be perfect, and test fitted on a couple of cars first, just to make sure.......

and thanx for your moral suport at this time........
maybe i'll take some pics, while in progress also....

Thank you for the generous offer.......... but i'm not that broke that i can't afford to do this...... NOW, if you would be willing to take me to work in the morning tommorow, just in case i didn't put enough hardner in the resin, and it hasn't cured fully........ that would be great..........
I just checked it, and it feels a little tachy, but it is hottter than hell here.......

nick99z24-----> what do you have in mind.... so far i'm open to sugestions....
I was talking more like, where i need to look around and see to get it sprayed in a color, or vinyl if someone wants it... or CF but if you have anyother ideas....

Hey, what about the posibility of having the 2" gaugues in there. you think NE1 would be intrested in that? Kinda like having a pillar guage pod, just in the front of you, or somewhere around the center slightly angled towards the driver.... that would be nifty!!!!!!!

JUNIOR-----> what do you think of the posibility of having the gauge pods there? I'm starting to take to that idea.....

HOLY crap............ i was just searching for Carbon fiber raw material, and suposedly there is a shortage somewhere. So far 5 people have told me that.
I am working on getting a few pieces, to test with, and play around.
I migh be able to get the colored pieces, where it would be posible to have it in RED, YELLOW, BLUE and of course, in Black.
Then there is also the Kevlar products too, which are slightly cheaper....

Either way, i need to make a decision, wether to go with aproximatly 8oz. fabric, which gives you a weave aporximatly at 1/4" or 2oz fabric with less than a 1/16" weave.... I'll take votes........

i would say the tighter weave would be better.... just my opinion... and the gauge pod idea isn't bad.. how do they fit up there? that could also cause problems with inspection for some people... i know NJ would probably have a fit for obstruction of view... i like the idea... but again... i dunno if you should make them "ALL" like that

Re: Dash replacement piece...

the first thing i need to do is make the replacement piece....... then i would build a separate mold off of the replacement piece for the pods....
And the obstruction, thing, i don't see why it would be a problem.......
there is a black line that the pod should fit below, and if not it would be so little that the winshield wipers would cover them.... so unless you cannot have winshield wipers cuz they obstruct your view..........
eiter way, that was looking into what kind of custom things i could acomplish........

well then, i'll give you the credit for the idea, and you send you one at cost. how bout that?
what would be a good number of pods, like 2, maybe 3?

Re: Dash replacement piece...

id leave it to the person whos buing them i know it will take time more it once they order but me personally i was thing 3 2.25 gauges. was working on just useng the mustang 3 gauge pod for the dash and just molding that in but i cant find a spar dash to do it on...as far as the obstruction thing if you put them in the center around the defrost vent there should be no problem with it passing any inspection that is the lowest part of the dash, also in nj that law says that if it doesnt go any higher then the highest part of the dash its accepatable and everyone know with cavs the highest part is the cluster cover so if it can be lower then that noone will have a problem
Re: Dash replacement piece...

does anyone know then what are the diffrent sizes for those gauges?
if there are several diffrent ones....... what is the most popular size for mfg's....

And as far as making this masterpice, and then being able to replicate it, i have no doubt at all.......
