removing headrests
Sunday, August 21, 2005 8:12 PM
Ok I have bought seat covers for my 2002 cavalier, does anyone know how to remove the headrest, or the plastic piece that hold the seatbelt onto the seat? As well where does one get some cool fabric to match the door panels?

How to remove the headrests/seat belt guides

Supplies:
~ eye glass flat head screwdriver
~ towel, rag, etc.
~ some sort of soap i.e. dish soap

Instructions:
01. Sit in the rear seat facing the front seat you will be removing the head rest from
02. Lean the front seat back so you are looking down at the head rest
03. Pull the head rest up as far as it will go
04. Take a small flat head screwdriver and slide in into one of the holes surrounding the head rest poles
05. Move it around until you feel some resistance (if you're lucky, you might be able to move the fabric a little and actually see the clip you need to remove)
06. Wiggle the screw driver around until the clip pops out (it may take a while, but eventually it will pop out)
07. Repeat steps 4-6 for the second head rest pole
08. Once you get the head rest off, turn it upside down and you will see two very thin metal discs holding the seat belt guide onto the head rest, you need to remove these
09. Take a screwdriver and pry up on the discs
10. Once you get the discs up a little bit, put some soap on the head rest poles
11. Take a towel and start twisting the discs, continue doing this until they slide off

*NOTE: After I did this mod my head rests did not stay up because I did not re-install the clips. If you want to be able to have your head rests stay in the upright position, make sure to re-install the clips.*

As far as fabric goes, I would try Your Auto Trim.

@ BoltZ22: Hum... I don't what to tell you. When I did it the first time I hadn't had my car for more than a few months and I knew jack $hit about anything on the car and I had no problems. Since then I have done it two more times and never had a single problem. What is giving you trouble? Maybe I can give you some pointers.

@ Sal Medina: All I can really say is to just keep looking for the clip. Maybe try shining a flashlight down there or something. It took me a while to find it the first time I did it.

@ ZFATALJ: The people that have posted here want to remove their head rests so they can install seat covers or remove the seat belt guides. No one ever said anything removing them and not re-installing them .

unzip the back of the seat, pull up the fabric, on the white plastic holder you will find a c-clip, pop it out, voila.

removing that dam clip in the head rest in a big pain in the........... I finally got mine by the way that was mentioned above never did bother putting those clips back in though, no problems at all either its been like 3-4 years now. I only notice the clips missing if I pull the headrest up all the way and they come out than but i never move them.

Its just very fustrating just have to look for the clip.

@ Viper98912: I don't know about you, but there are no zippers on the backs of my seats .

@ pins 96sunfire: Yeah, getting the clips out is the worst part of the whole process. I didn't put mine back in either because I never leave my head rests up so it really doesn't matter to me.

Ok i dont know about no screw driver, no soap and no towel but if you have enough strength if you pull it up and down like 3 times it will come right out clips will still be in there. and you can just rip those circle clips down with the plastic till they hit the mouth shape in the metal then you gotta twist or beat it with a hammer. i used both options
