Hi,
First off, just found an older post by Shifted directing someone to Black Cat Custom to find Canadian white faced gauges. Just what I needed - Awesome.
My question is regarding installation in a Sunfire with stock red lighting. If I choose a gauge overlay with black numbers, will the red light show through at night? How about if I choose red numbers (I'd prefer black, but lighting is my biggest concern). Anyone got any experience here?
Thanks.
out of curiousity, how much are black cat customs overlays approximately? Id like to get the km version aswell for my 99
Just got off the phone with Alex at Black Cat. VERY nice guy, and really knowledgeable. He was able to answer the questions I was asking in this post.
For those interested, the Sunfire lights themselves are clear, it's just a red film that provides the red lightings (many probably already knew this). All overlays that I've come across are actually a full stock overlay replacement. Since the red film is attached to the stock overlay, you're left with clear lighting. Usually the overlay will come with it's own film to provide the lighting you want. In the case of the Black Cat Custom overlay, you can choose the color (from a list of available ones).
As for price, he quoted me $174 Canadian for 3 pieces - The instrument cluster overlay, the HVAC panel overlay, and the dimmer switch (only applies to Cavalier's). Not sure what the price is for just the first two pieces. Shipping is about $10 - $20 within Canada depending on speed.
Here's the trick, you need to remove the needles in order to install the Black Cat gauges. Other's that I've seen (ISP, for example), do not require you to remove the stock needles. (The ISP ones are more actually more expensive than Black Cat when you factor in the US exchange, duty, etc..). Despite what everyone here claims, Black Cat says it is possible to remove the needles on a 2000+ Cav/Sunfire. He said there's a trick to it, but many people just end up breaking them. So, if you don't want to risk it, they will install the overlay on your gauges for $49 Canadian (plus shipping both ways). This also includes a "calibration" that ensures that the gauges are installed correctly (speedmeter reads correctly, etc..).
Anyway, the gauges seem high quality, and they're super nice to deal with. I'm definately going to get a set.
