Custom Autometer gauge cluster
Thursday, June 23, 2005 12:07 AM
just wondering if this has been done before

basically all the stock gauges replaced by autometer C2 gauges...

fuel level, water temp, speedo and tach replaced by c2 gauges

I was thinking about putting the tach in the center (the way it should be) one of the monster ones (yea yea) and using the shift lite. I'd put the speedo in the right corner where the stock tach is and I think it'll look pretty sweet. 160mph even tho its pretty useless since top speed is still 108 with the governor

I know people are in the process of doing it like myself, but wondering if anyone else has pics of this done...

Long ago Jokr had pics of his custom gauge cluster all done in Autometer gauges. I think it may have been for RHD as well.

my buddy did that in his escort gt. he used a piece of polished aluminium and pop riveted in and replaced the bulb with blue LED's. it looked realy good, but that project failed. that's what he gets for putting $4 grand inthe engine of a 89 ford escort gt.

Check out Doublezed's gauge's HERE (hope he doesn't mind). There not autometer but you can get some ideas...

When Alex (CarbonFiber) had his fire, it had a custom setup, dont remember if it was autometer gauges or not but all aftermarket gauges.

I saw those.. I always had the idea, but seeing him do it with cyberdyne gauges kind of made me want to do it with autometer.

Anyone know how it'll effect the odometer? I assume the computer will still log miles even tho it can't display them... I'm planning on keeping the cluster modular, so I can always take it out and put the old gauges back in for inspection

The 00+ J's will continue to accumulate mileage correctly. The 99-'s would not.

This is a lot easier on the 00+ ones because we can take our cluster out and go driving around with no accusations of odometer fraud

Thats quite a bit different, he's using a 3400 wired up to a Tech-3, no stock computer there.

what I'm planning on doing is just removing the cluster, and making a custom peice that is the same size that fits in the stock location, but stuffing autometer gauges in there.

I'm currently in the design phase to see what arrangement of gauges I would like since my original plan is going to look... well... stupid.

Also, another problem would be turn indicators, idiot lights, etc that would no longer be in view that would kind of get me a little anxious so I'll have to figure something out for those.

I'm starting to think about having a 3 3/8" speedo mounted next to a 3 3/8" tach in the center, then having 3 2 1/16" gauges on either side, and having a shift light rigged off the tach so I can watch the road without watching the tach.

I already have an A-pillar pod, and I have C2 air/fuel and voltmeter gauges in the car. Here's a crappy paint picture of what the layout will most likely look like.

I don't think you'll be able to fit all those gauges in the cluster, 2 big ones and 2 small ones will be about it.

Well the dummy lights are just LEDs IIRC, so you could just wire up colored LEDs to let you know something is going on, probably label underneath the lights.

Fitment wont be too bad. There is plenty of room in the dash. I have been thinking about making a cluster like this for a while now. The only thing that I am worried about is all the wiring that will need to take place. Good luck on the project and if you can create some kind of instructions during the process that would be great.
