Anyone own a Canadian 2000 Sunfire?

Hi,

I live in Canada, but own an American 2000 Cavalier Z24. I'm looking to replace my gauge cluster with one from a Canadian 2001 Sunfire that I found at a salvage yard. I have 3 questions that I'm hoping someone can help me with:

1). Since my car is American, my speedometer's highest number is 110 Mph (180 KM/h). However, the Sunfire's gauge is measured in KM/h because it's Canadian. I don't think this is a big deal, but the funny thing that the speedometer's highest number is 220 KM/h (140 Mph). I would have thought the Cavalier and Sunfire would be the same. So, I'm trying to find out if this difference is because of the model year (2000 vs. 2001), or because of the Country (America vs. Canada). Anyone out there own a Canadian 2000 Sunfire and can tell me what the top speedometer number is, that would be great.

2). Also, the redline number is different. Mine is approx. 5500 RPM, while this Sunfire gauge is showing approx. 6500 RPM. Assuming this came from a 2.2L where mine is a 2.4L and that's why the redline is different. Can't imagine this is model year or Country issue...

3). Anyone know what the above two questions will mean once I plug this thing in? Will I have to visit the dealer and get some sensor's adjusted? Also, my Cavalier currently has 61000 miles, where the Sunfire gauge shows 87000 km from it's life on the Sunfire. What will the odometer show when I plug it in? Is it smart enough to figure all this out, or is this further adjusting to be done at the dealer?

I guess this is more than 3 questions... But any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Matt

Hi folks,

After some digging on Cardomain, I found out that US cars have 110 Mph speedometers, while Canadian cars have 220 KM/h speedometers for both 2000 and 2001 (not a direct conversion for some reason).

Also, the Sunfire's have a 6500 redline, while the Cavalier's have a 5500 redline in all cases that I found (both 2.2L and 2.4L). Weird since they're the same engines in each car!

I'm going to call a dealership tomorrow to see what's impacted if I install KM/h gauges in a US car that currently has Mph gauges. So no worries.

Thanks anyway.

2.4's don't have a 5500 RPM redline, I've owned 2 2.4L's, both had 6500 redlines, just like my gf's 2200 and my sisters 2200.

The canadians cluster works out to 140mph. No idea why they did that since its governed at 108mph just like the US cars. You can replace your cluster with any other cluster from 2000 and up Cavaliers or sunfires, the calibration for the speed to units is in the cluster, not any other part of the car.
