Thanks for all the help guys. I am going to try and work on it again tommorrow and maybe post some pics
You should take more care to get it as smooth as possible before you lay the glass. It looks to me like there are rough spots underneath the glass that are making bumps in it.
Tip of the Day:
The more time you spend to prep the surface and smooth it out, the less time you will have to spend bondoing and sanding.
And Jason's advice about either drilling holes before you glass or wrapping around the edges is exactly right. It'll be evident over time too.
^^^^listen to the man. he is the fiberglass guru! franky boy does all my glass work.....you should see the bumper he is making for me. simply crazy!
here is another tip for you.....make sure the airbag cover isnt dipped down any further than the rest of the dash around it. the last cav dash i did in carbon was completely shaved, and i had to fill a bit over the airbag cover because it dipped down a bit. i wish i had pics to show, but i dont.

Thanks again good pointers guys. I did prep the surface before I layed the fiberglass down. Thats what the weird colors are underneath it. I sanded it and then bondo around the airbag piece and in the unlevel pieces.

that should be the tip of the day everyday in about any part of car building.
people dont want to take 20 minutes of time to prep, what they fail to realise is that 20 minutes will save them a couple hours down the line.
this wasnt fully meant for u herman but for anyone working on any projects.

i think i am gonna go get a spare dash hood over the summer and try this... i'm only 17 and don't know anything about fiberglass, anyone got any good sites/pointers for me? and can i do this somehow and keep the airbag functional? i need the airbag to stay functional because my insurance will void my policy if the airbag is taken out.

Thats what I was thinking too that this topic came out pretty good after a bad start. I didn't work on the dash any this weekend but I am working on it tonight for sure. I'll take pics when I am done with it today
Oh yeah should I cut the air bubbles out before I lay another layer of fiberglass or after I am completely done?????Oh and can I lay down 2 layers of fiberglass down right after each other??? Like when the first one is still tacky.
Air bubbles = weak spots...but it's your decision on whether to cut them out or not.
Just use your own judgement.
And yes, you can keep laying the glass to your little heart's content. No need for it to dry.
this will be uber helpful for my bird dash fiberglassing, i just wish i had the money for the resin *smacks own head* "D'OH"
"I live my life a quarter mile at a time..." "for those ten seconds or less I'm free"
OK cool I will cut the bubbles out and then lay a couple more layers
yeah if you have the time lay all your layers down at once, theres one of the reasons its taking u so long. i'll lay up 3-4 layers at a time just adding layer by layer,u can do this all the time on vertical pieces because to many layers will get to heavy and start to slide on you, but for flat pieces you can pretty much lay all your fiberglass at one time and be done with it.

When I Glassed My dash I went 6-9 layers, However I made the whole dash, the only plastic underneith is around the guage cluster, i needed it for he proper shape
I used more around all the curves but not IN the curves themselves.
I personnaly would go ahead now and drill 1000 hols in it and lay on 3-4 more layers then grind off knots and gellcoat it.
good luck!
