Putting dash back on
Saturday, May 28, 2005 6:02 AM
Hey guys. I just got my cluster/HVAC panel thing painted and im wondering how do I put it back on without the wheel and the whipper/signal arms messing up the paint. I dont want to take the wheel off. Any ideas?

-Thanks for helping me paint this nikki, and for feeding me.

Well I'm assuming by now you're probably at work. Bring your dash and the piece to the meet tonight, and if it's not raining, I'll help you put it back in.

We'll still be there around 10:30 trust me lol.

Im off work now for the rest of the night. I did try to put it back on this morning giving it all night to dry, ha it seemed try. I tryed to put it back on but the 2 handles only put marks on it and my thumb did also. I fixed them best I could, you cant see the 2 since the wheel will be there, and the thumb print is hard to see, nothing major. Ill be out there like around 8 when you guys start to show up. See ya then. Pz

Ha well it took 3 of us to do this. 1 person holds the turn signal arm out of the way and some of the dash up. Another holds the other whiper arm back and the dash. The third person (in the driver seat) should push in the tac knob and carefully force the dash over that and work the dash on. Its so easy with 3 ppl.

so youre saying its virtually impossible to do with one person then?

Its not imposible. Its just WAY more easy with more. It will help you avoid messing up the paint alot more also. Nikki, doug and myself got it on in under 2 min. Now if it was just me again I would have to balance the dash, somehow pull back both handles out of the way, and get the dash over the tac button. Just call a buddy or 2 over and spend the 3 min on it.

Cuspid 1200 Watt. I never had it hooked up but I know it works. A buddy gave it to me a while back.

I did mine by myself....

I took a soft T-shirt and used it to cover the wiper and turn signal knobs, then pulled it tight around the steering wheel (thus moving them as far out of the way as possible). Tied it off so I didn't have to hold it. The guage still rubbed on the knobs, but the soft t-shirt made it slip right in and there were no scratches. I wish I would've thought of this the first time as I scratched the hell out of my paint and had to redo it.

Okay, are we talking about the plastic bezel that surrounds the radio /HVAC/ guage cluster?

I've removed & re-installed it by myself numerous times (it's painted as well) without any difficulty or even coming close to scratching it.

You do it while the upper dash is removed, go over the steering wheel at a 45 degree angle, snap it into place & voila! No need to touch the signal or wiper arms at all.

I'm not raggin on you, just trying to visualize exactly what you're trying to do.

If you're talking about a totally different piece of interior trim, please ignore this post because I'm a retard

We tried about every angle and it still hit the wiper arm and turn signal arm. I myself don't have a cavy, and I'm not used to pulling that piece in and out. Sunfire interiors are SO much easier to get apart and put back together
