Lights next to shifter HELP
Friday, May 06, 2005 1:24 PM
Hello J-gods,

A quick question (hopefully with quick answers as i'm trying to fix this now), recently the lights (light up the P-N-D-1-2) went out in my 2000 Sunfire automatic. I've looked into it and can't seem to figure out what the problem was. My question is this: Is there a bulb in there that might have blown? Maybe it's a fuse problem (these are the only lights that I have a problem with so I don't know about that)? Thanks!!!

You don't need to take that cover off to get to the bulb. The bulb is on the driver side, on the bottom of that plastic peice. You can reach under there and find it.

Just twist the (for lack of a better term) the bulb socket, and pull it out. i forgot which way it turns though.

Should take a 912 bulb

I recently replaced the shifter light bulb in my 2000 cavy. It isn't that difficult at all. You just need to unbolt the center console (There are 4 or 5 bolts, I don't remember exactly). There are 2 or 3 bolts in the bottom of the compartment in the console, there's one I believe in the little pod behind the shifter (The pod should lift out), and there was one under a little plastic piece just behind the cup holders. Once you get the bolts out, lift the console up enough to reach under it on the driver's side. Feel for the light bulb socket, it should be right along the P-R-N-D-2-1 indicator. Just twist it out, replace the bulb, and put it back in. It took me only a few minutes to do.

i know the pics have terrible lighting... just bare with me while i try to help you out...

first you should remove the four bolts holding down the piece. not too hard?
bolt #1:

bolt #2:

bolt #3 & #4 (under armrest):

now just try and peel off the outer ring that goes around the shifter... you might need to use a screwdriver or something to get it started...

alright! now just make sure the park brake is in the up position, and then just wiggle this thing right out! it isn't held on by any other clips or bolts of any sort, so jiggling is all you need to do.

now get eye-level to this piece... you're almost there.

this picture is probably the most important yet the hardest one to make out... so sorry! anyways you can see my hand grabbing the end of the lightbulb, you can even see the wires leading into the plastic bottom. grab that, and twist.

the bulb will come right out of there...

now just turn on your lights to check if it works...

if not, then it may be the bulb. it could also possibly be a fuse... or else one of the wires to the bulb just might have came loose. that's all that's coming to my mind though... good luck, i hope the pics helped and again, i'm sorry they're so dark!!!

I need to change this light too, but I have a problem.

Ive got all my switches for lights, subs, underbodies, etc etc in my center console (under armrest). I cant get those 2 bolts out that are in the compartment without nearly destroying my control box. Is there any way to change this bulb without taking the center console out (or at least those two bolts)?

Neo, I don't believe there is a way without removing the center console... Maybe if you took the two forward bolts off and just lifted it up? That's what I did essentially (although I did take the two rear bolts off), but I didn't pull the whole console. You probably wouldn't have that much room to work with, so a lot of patience would be needed.

Also, just so everyone knows, the whole console does not need to be removed, it just needs to be loose enough to reach under and remove the bulb.. Of course, it would be easier if the whole console could be removed, but it isn't necessary.

BoltZ22 - are there little dots with an orange indicator that shows you what gear you are in next to the P-R-N-D-3-2-1 on your shifter? If so, I believe that there is a light...

Thanks I'll try that eventually.

This i sthe light we are talking about. The orange you see isnt an indpendent light, but rather just an orange filter type thing the slides with the shifter.

If you have good hands you can reach up through the side of the console (requires some minor bending) and turn the blub and remove it. The wires will extend it out of the console area.

What size is it? I always thought it was a 194 like most other lights.

I didn't remove my console to replace it - just reached up there.

I know this. I'm assuming, however, that the models which do not have a light along the shifter also do not have the indicator which shows which gear it is in. I think I've seen pictures of the gear indicator being up under the speedometer on these models.
