fiberglassing dash '02 sunfire
Wednesday, March 16, 2005 5:38 AM
I have been thinking of fiberglassing my dash. I must point out that I never did anything with fiberglass and I would pay someone but rather do it myself so I can say I did that.
I have 2002 sunfire and the dash of course is soft padded. I was wondering if anyone out there can give me suggestion on how to fiber it or make it look like fiberglass hahhaa. Should I sand it down and then primer it a lot?? I am sure that sounds noobish but hey we alll been there and one point or time.
Also list any materials I will be needing also. Thanks to all that can give me any suggestions. Thanks again.!!

im about to tackle this, i dont really see a need to fiberglass it, im just going to clean it with an acohol cleaner, like dx103 then scuff it with a red scotch brite pad, then spray with 3 coats of k36 high build primer with dx814 flexibilizer block the primer down, and then spray it with dbc base coat and then clear coat, all the products i listed are ppg. instant message me sometime next week and i will let you know how it turns out.

im the process right now, if u sand it enough and use enough coats of high build primer you should be ok. The only reason you would need to fiberglass is if you were molding somethin into it or covering something up. I wrapped mine in fleece covering up the airbag hole and the two small air vents cuz im gonna glass over it.

No need to fiberglass it at all if you're going for the smooth painted look. Simply remove the padded vinyl and use some bodyfiller on the holes around the gauge hood.

You only really need fiberglass if you're doing something "extra" to modify the dash. Otherwise, like when I uncovered my 2001 Sunfire dash, it's hella smooth plastic.

Maybe do a little sanding before priming and painting in order to get the excess vinyl fuzz off and leave a decent surface to prime too.
